Qatar 1-3 Senegal LIVE! Hosts facing exit – World Cup 2022 result, match stream and latest updates today

Qatar vs Senegal - LIVE!

Qatar have made World Cup history this afternoon, both in scoring their first goal at the tournament, but also in that they face elimination after just two goals if the Netherlands beat Ecudaor. Felix Sanchez’s side will become the first country to host the World Cup and be dumped out after two games if that happens.

Senegal delivered a far more assured performance than in their opening defeat to the Dutch, taking the lead through Boulaye Dia, pouncing on a pour error in the Qatari defence. They then doubled that advantage through ex Bristol City striker Famara Diedhiou, who powered home an awesome header after the break. And although Mohammed Muntari gave the hosts some hope late on, Bamba Dieng ensured the points would go to Senegal, immeasurably boosting their last 16 hopes.

See how the game at Al Thumama Stadium unfolded below with Standard Sport’s dedicated match blog.

FULL TIME

15:00 , Dominic Booth

It’s all over. Qatar had their moments, but Senegal have overpowered the host nation here and win 3-1.

A big win for the African side, who will hope to qualify for the last 16. Qatar are all but eliminated.

95 mins: A late yellow card for Madibo, into the last knockings of this now.

Added time

14:55 , Dominic Booth

90 mins: Not even six minutes of added time will save Qatar here.

14:53 , Dominic Booth

88 mins: Is there another late twist to come in this World Cup? Hassan drives wide after a nicely-worked Qatar free-kick.

14:49 , Dominic Booth

85 mins: That hope for Qatar didn’t last long. It’s good movement from Dieng to find space in the box, before arrowing home a ruthless finish.

It should be game over.

GOAL! Qatar 1-3 Senegal | Dieng ‘84

14:48 , Dominic Booth

Goal Senegal! Dieng turns it home and that should put things beyond doubt. A sucker punch for the hosts.

14:43 , Dominic Booth

79 mins: It was always going to come from a cross and via a header. And that’s exactly how it comes, after some good play down the right, the substitute Muntari meets it beautfiully, powering it down and home with his forehead.

GOAL! Qatar 1-2 Senegal | Muntari ‘78

14:42 , Dominic Booth

The hosts are back in it! With their first goal of the tournament! Cue wild scenes.

14:38 , Dominic Booth

74 mins: The raft of substitutions continue, with Muntari introduced for Al Haydos for Qatar, as those two Senegal subs are made as well.

You can’t think Mendy will be happy that his goal is coming under so much pressure, with so long left in the game.

(Getty Images)

14:37 , Dominic Booth

73 mins: Bamba and Ndiaye are on their way onto the pitch for Senegal, after another Qatari hoist into the mixer.

Set pieces, it seems, are their forte.

14:34 , Dominic Booth

71 mins: It’s rather odd that Qatar have chosen this moment to start playing well, 2-0 down for the second game running and staring elimination from the tournament in the face.

They continue to probe.

Sub

14:33 , Dominic Booth

69 mins: Boudiaf is replaced by Hatem for Qatar.

14:31 , Dominic Booth

67 mins: Again Mendy saves! This one is top drawer.

Crosses into the box are working for Qatar and Mohammad should have really scored from close range.

14:29 , Dominic Booth

65 mins: Diatta is replaced by Ciss for Senegal, a holding midfielder for a wide player.

(Getty Images)

14:27 , Dominic Booth

63 mins: Mendy is forced into action once again, this time from Almoez and it’s a pretty smart stop from the Chelsea man.

Maybe this isn’t over, yet?

14:26 , Dominic Booth

62 mins: Hassan takes a shot out of absolutely nowhere and Eduoard Mendy is briefly worried. It just flies past his left hand post. He shouts at his defenders, obviously.

14:24 , Dominic Booth

60 mins: Has Felix Sanchez got anything on his bench to turn the tide in this game? It’s all too easy for Senegal.

14:22 , Dominic Booth

58 mins: Almoez leading the fight for Qatar up front now, trying to hold the ball up to get themselves a platform.

Senegal still have strength in numbers to snuff it out, though.

14:20 , Dominic Booth

56 mins: A scramble in the Senegal box denies Qatar!

That was a really threatening moment, but nobody could get on the end of the corner.

Senegalese delight

14:17 , Dominic Booth

53 mins: Jakobs goes into the book for a trailing arm in the face of a Qatar player.

The hosts need something.

(Getty Images)

14:15 , Dominic Booth

50 mins: Well, pretty much the exact opposite of what Sanchez would have wanted after his half-time team talk.

A fine header, that, from the ex Bristol City striker Diedhiou and it leaves Qatar in big trouble.

GOAL! Qatar 0-1 Senegal | Diedhiou ‘48

14:13 , Dominic Booth

47 mins: GOAL! Diedhiou rises high to head it in and Senegal lead 2-0!

SECOND HALF

14:09 , Dominic Booth

Here we go again.

First half thoughts

13:58 , Dominic Booth

Qatar haven’t had a shot on target in this tournament so far, but they might feel like they should have had a penalty in that first half. Once they didn’t get it, it almost felt inevitable that Senegal would punish the hosts’ chaotic defence at the other end, and so it proved.

Only 45 minutes (plus added time) separate Qatar and the ignominy of an early World Cup bath, so to speak.

HALF TIME: 0-1

13:52 , Dominic Booth

There were at least a few glimmers from Qatar late in that half, with Afif at the heart of everything they’re doing well.

But they trail at the break and simply don’t look good enough for this tournament.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

13:49 , Dominic Booth

48 mins: Senegal’s experience is starting to come into this. Now they’re ahead, they are able to manage the game, keep the ball for periods and frustrate the host nation.

Added time

13:47 , Dominic Booth

45 mins: Seven added minutes.

13:46 , Dominic Booth

44 mins: Felix Sanchez has a grim look on his face, and Qatar have huge work to do if they’re to stay in their home World Cup.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

13:43 , Dominic Booth

Dia capitalises after a slip in the Qatar defence and it’s a clinical finish to prompt delight from the Senegal fans in the stands.

Khouki will not want to watch that back, he was trying to clear it, slipped and allowed Dia in.

GOAL! Qatar 0-1 Senegal | Boulaye Dia 41'

13:41 , Dominic Booth

Ah, just as I write that. That’s poor defending and Senegal capitalise. 1-0

13:41 , Dominic Booth

39 mins: A quick theory – if Barsham was initially Qatar’s second choice behind Saad Al Sheeb, then he might not be particularly good.

We’re seeing that with a few nervy moments this afternoon. Qatar’s outfielders at least have been much improved from the side that lost to Ecuador.

13:39 , Dominic Booth

37 mins: Someone remind these two teams they lost their first games, and a win would be really helpful.

Impetus is lacking.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

Penalty?

13:35 , Dominic Booth

34 mins: A pretty decent appeal for a Qatar penalty. Not given, but VAR will take a look.

There was contact on Afif, but he was maybe trying to anticipate the contact.

13:32 , Dominic Booth

31 mins: The ref is handing out bookings like dentists hand out stickers. Dia is shown a yellow after a fairly innocuous-looking challenge.

13:30 , Dominic Booth

29 mins: A snap-shot from Sabaly after another questionable piece of goalkeeping by Barsham. It whizzes wide.

These are half chances for Senegal at the moment, nothing more.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

13:28 , Dominic Booth

27 mins: Qatar left-back Hassan is the latest to see his appeal for a corner waved away by the referee, after a decent run and long-range shot. The officials are missing some enormous deflections.

13:25 , Dominic Booth

24 mins: That’s a bit better from Senegal and Gueye gets a shot away, firing just wide of the post. A nice give-and-go.

13:24 , Dominic Booth

23 mins: Senegal send in a set piece, with a little shimmy before the kick comes in to distract the Qatar defence.

Referee Lahoz spots a foul, so it’s a futile idea anyway.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

13:22 , Dominic Booth

20 mins: Mohammad gets the first booking of the game. Looked to be a harsh one, actually.

There’s a sedate feeling to this game, but maybe that’s just in comparison to the end of the Iran versus Wales game.

13:20 , Dominic Booth

19 mins: Gianni Infantino is here for this one. Wonder if he feels Qatari or Senegalese today?

The host nation are enjoying a rare foray forward.

13:18 , Dominic Booth

17 mins: Barsham is called into action for the first time, after a near post shot from Diatta storming down the Senegal left.

The corner is whipped in right-footed and Barsham was left in no-man’s land trying to claim that. There’s a couple of players down after a collision.

13:16 , Dominic Booth

15 mins: Afif hits one from range and, while it’s well over and not troubling Mendy’s goal, the attacking play from Qatar was a bit more positive there. More of that, please guys.

13:15 , Dominic Booth

14 mins: Qatar were criticised for not being physical enough against Ecuador and you can see why, they’re too easily pushed around.

This time, though, Almoez draws a shove from Koulibaly to win a Qatari free-kick.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

13:13 , Dominic Booth

12 mins: There’s plenty of width for Senegal today, and Mendy found Diatta with a diagonal ball to the left there.

The cross comes back in but it’s well nodded away.

13:10 , Dominic Booth

9 mins: Diédhiou takes a little too long on the ball after being fed from the right. But it’s another promising moment for Senegal, who have made an assured start.

13:08 , Dominic Booth

7 mins: Afif is a star of this Qatari team and he illicits cheers from the home fans when he picks up the ball and drives at Senegal. It comes to nothing, mind you.

13:05 , Dominic Booth

4 mins: Some tidy football from Senegal and Sabaly in particular. They’re on top of the early possession, predictably.

Sarr cuts in from the right and his shot goes just wide; he thinks it should have been a corner. He’s right, it was deflected.

13:04 , Dominic Booth

3 mins: It’s all change for Qatar, and to be fair, they need it.

13:02 , Dominic Booth

2 mins: Dion Dublin on commentary for the BBC says he’s predicting a Senegal win.

We all are, Dion, after that miserable opening display from Qatar against Ecuador. Even without Sadio Mane, the African side are strong and full of recognisable Premier Leagues names.

KICK OFF!

13:00 , Dominic Booth

Here we go then!

The Asian champions take on the African champions at Al Thumama Stadium.

12:55 , Dominic Booth

The teams are out for the anthems ahead of kick off. Qatar are looking to avoid becoming an ignominious piece of World Cup history today – a host nation has never exited the tournament after just two games.

Odds

Before kick-off, a look at today’s match odds courtesy of BonusCodeBets:

BonusCodeBets - Qatar v Senegal

  • Qatar to win 19/4

  • The draw 5/2

  • Senegal to win 4/6

The stadium is starting to fill up as we approach kick-off.

Qatar and Senegal will both almost certainly face elimination if they lose today. It will be humiliation for the hosts, let alone the African giants.

Jakobs gets the nod

12:25 , Alex Young

Senegal also lost their opener 2-0, with two late goals from the Netherlands, and another dodgy goalkeeping performance from Edouard Mendy. He keeps his place but there are changes in front of him.

Ismail Jakobs came off the bench in Senegal's opening 2-0 defeat by Netherlands and is afforded his first start. Senegal manager Aliou Cisse swaps Jakobs in for the injured Cheikhou Kouyate and Pape Abou Cisse is replaced by Famara Diedhiou.

All change between the posts

12:13 , Alex Young

Qatar have swapped out first-choice goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb for today’s crucial game.

A 2-0 defeat to Ecuador on Sunday saw Qatar become the first host nation to ever lose their opening game of the tournament, and will be the first team eliminated should they suffer the same fate in Al Thumama this afternoon.

Goalkeeper Al Sheeb was arguably the most shakey during his country's World Cup debut, in which nerves appeared to get the better of them, and Meshaal Barsham has been given a chance to impress in one of three changes.

A first win for Africa?

11:49 , Alex Young

The continent will be banking on Senegal to stop the rot and earn a first win for an African nation at this World Cup.

"We are still determined because we know that there is something that we can still achieve during this World Cup and we still believe in our chances," Senegal captain Kalildou Koulibaly said as they prepared to take on hosts Qatar on Friday.

Qatar are the Asian champions but their counterparts Japan and Saudi Arabia have overshadowed them by coming from behind to beat Germany and Argentina in the major shocks of the tournament.

Cisse wants strikers to step up

11:32 , Alex Young

In the absence of Sadio Mane and Cheikhou Kouyate, Senegal coach Aliou Cisse is demanding more from forwards Ismaila Sarr and Krepin Diatta.

"We needed to be more effective," he told reporters. "Ismaila and Krepin are responsible there, but of course, the absence of Mane is a problem for us.

"Our attackers are good and we know what they are capable of. We need to work on it, with Ismaila and the others. We expect a lot from him and Krepin."

Do or die for Qatar

11:16 , Alex Young

Qatar must win this afternoon to stand any realistic hopes of qualification, but their lack of squad depth was exposed against Ecuador. Despite trailing 2-0 for most of the game, the hosts were the only side to make just two of five allocated substitutions.

Senegal suffered defeat to the Netherlands by an identical scoreline, with both goals coming in the last 10 minutes. The Dutch adopted a conservative approach in the Senegal game, recording fewer shots than their opponents.

They could remain cautious against Ecuador, who in two-goal Enner Valencia possess one of the six players tied at the top of the Golden Boot standings.

Score prediction: Senegal win

11:00 , Alex Young

Senegal will have been disappointed to concede twice late on against the Netherlands and should have enough quality to beat the hosts.

Senegal to win, 3-1.

Senegal worry over Kouyate and Diallo

10:47 , Alex Young

Cheikou Kouyate twisted an ankle in Senegal’s defeat to the Netherlands, with Aliou Cisse confirming after the game that the experienced midfielder required further checks after being carried off on a stretcher.

Abdou Diallo also went off in that game with another injury, though Cisse is hoping that both could be fit for today.

Qatar pondering changes

10:39 , Alex Young

Having failed to register a shot on target against Ecuador, there may be changes to the Qatar team for their second fixture of the tournament, though it is not thought that Felix Sanchez has to contend with any fresh injury concerns.

Saad Al Sheeb endured a difficult evening in goal but a change to Meshaal Barsham does not seem likely.
