The Purdue board of trustees has approved an amended seven-year contract for football coach Jeff Brohm that is worth $36.8 million, with $31.5 million guaranteed and $2 million in retention/signing bonuses already earned.

The deal should place Brohm among the 20 highest-paid coaches in college football.

Last winter Brohm was wooed by his alma mater, Louisville, and seriously considered the job before deciding to stay at Purdue. This new deal is the financial reward for that decision. Brohm's annual base compensation escalates by $100,000 every year from 2019-25, from $4.2 million to $4.8 million. The deal also includes an $850,000 signing bonus next month and another $850,000 in January 2020, plus annual retention bonuses starting at $300,000 and escalating to $600,000.

The contract also calls for up to $4.35 million annually in staff compensation.

Purdue finished 6-7 last year, advancing to a bowl game in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2006-07. The Boilermakers shocked college football in October with a rout of then-No. 2 Ohio State, effectively knocking the Buckeyes out of the College Football Playoff.

Brohm's two-year record of 13-13 is the best mark at the school for a coach in his first two seasons since Joe Tiller in 1997-98.
