Puerto Rico's World Baseball Classic run has caused a hair dye shortage

Puerto Rico has been the talk of the World Baseball Classic for a multitude of reasons.

First and foremost, Puerto Rico remains the only unbeaten team in the tournament as it heads into Wednesday’s championship game against Team USA. That alone is a pretty special story, especially when adding it has outscored its opponents 55-18 over the seven-game winning streak.

Not far behind that though is the new trend Team Puerto Rico started that has now taken over back home.

As we mentioned last week, nearly every player on the team has bleached his hair blond in a show of team unity. According to the Associated Press, that statement has caught on so big in Puerto Rico that there’s actually a shortage of blond hair dye.

Pharmacies and beauty stores across Puerto Rico are running out of hair dye as a growing number of men go blond in support of the island’s baseball players who bleached their hair as a bonding ritual ahead of the World Baseball Classic.

“Ever since they began winning, this has not stopped,” said Myrna Rios, a manager at a Sally Beauty Supply store in the capital of San Juan. “We have run out of the product in most of our stores.”

That’s pretty amazing.

If this doesn’t tell us how strongly the people of Puerto Rico feel about their team and what the World Baseball Classic represents to them, then nothing does. It’s more than an every four year attraction. It’s an event that allows them to come together to celebrate baseball, cheer on and, in this instance, even look like their heroes.

This may have started off as baseball players doing something different to have a little fun, but it’s very cool to see it become something bigger. It’s only hair dye, sure, but it’s carrying a deeper meaning for the people back in Puerto Rico. That’s what the spirit of the World Baseball Classic is supposed to be all about.
