Promising Oilers Prospect On Big Heater

EDMONTON -- They don't ask how, just how many.

Edmonton Oilers fans may be asking themselves if any prospects in the pipeline could be goal-scorers in the NHL. If a recent run by one particular prospect is to be taken seriously, there might be something there that hasn't come out yet.

Fans are eagerly anticipating Matt Savoie's arrival in the NHL. Although it seems unlikely that it will happen this year (although, never say never), he isn't the only prospect to be excited about in Bakersfield.

In his second season with the Bakersfield Condors, Matvey Petrov is overcoming a slow start to become a reliable offensive presence for the team. Despite opening the season with two points in the first two games, he would only record one assist in his next nine contests.

This is now old news because Petrov's offense is beginning to blossom.

In his last five games, the young Russian has scored six total goals, registering at least one goal in each game. Three of those goals have been game-winning tallies. Over those five games, he also has 11 shots.

Now that he has 12 points in 24 games, he's only two points off of his numbers from last season. In 53 games last year, he recorded nine goals and five assists while firing 71 shots on net.

This should give Oilers fans a reason to be optimistic about his development. Considering that he's a sixth-round draft pick, it would be a massive win for the organization if he became an NHL player in any capacity.

Time will tell for the 21-year-old. Hopefully, for the sake of the fans, Petrov will continue to score as many goals as possible.
