"It's A Privilege To Play With Him": Canucks Boeser Discusses What Makes Quinn Hughes So Special

Quinn Hughes is having one of the greatest seasons in Vancouver Canucks history. Not only is he on pace for 95 points, which would be a new career high, but his 23-goal projection would tie the franchise record for goals by a defenseman in a season. A player who is receiving both Norris and Hart Trophy consideration, Hughes is also just a few points away from passing Alex Edler and into first all-time for points by a defenceman in franchise history.

One player who has had the opportunity to watch Hughes' entire career from up close is Brock Boeser. In fact, Boeser scored the goal, which resulted in Hughes' first career assist and point in the NHL. Seven seasons later, they both sit in the franchise's top 20 for all-time points and have developed into leaders on and off the ice.

"He's such a good teammate, first of all," said Boeser when asked about Hughes' season so far. "But the difference from last year this year, I mean, I don't know. I feel like he's the same player. He goes out there, and he can dominate each and every night. He can make plays out of nothing. Such a good skater and he's a good leader. He's obviously so important for our team, and to see the success he's having, it just doesn't surprise me."

Canucks fans are a little spoiled as they get to watch Hughes on a nightly basis. He pulls off moves that few players in the world can do while making it look easy. While the moves look spectacular from a distance, they are also stunning from ice level, according to Boeser.

"Most cutbacks he does, I'm just like, Wow, that's pretty impressive. It's a privilege to play with him. We all enjoy being on the same ice as him. This has been a blast so far."

If Hughes wins his second Norris and can get to 95 points, it will be in part thanks to Boeser. The two have combined on goals many times this season, including on Saturday against the Edmonton Oilers when Boeser drew the secondary assist on Hughes' 12th of the season. At this point, it is a good bet that Hughes will assist Boeser's 200th career goal, which will come later this season, while Boeser will most likely be on the ice when Hughes breaks the franchise record for points by a defenceman.
