Primerano's Highlight Reel Shootout Goal Lifts Canada

After nearly blowing a three goal lead late in the third period, Canada got the job done in a shootout with Marie-Philip Poulin and Chloe Primerano scoring. Primerano's 5-4 game securing shootout winner came on a spectacular deke that welcomed the touted teenager to Canada's national team.

“I didn’t really know [I was up], but someone just tapped me on the back and said ‘go.’ I went on and just hoped for the best," said Primerano. "I don’t have one specific move, but I heard what the coaches said about what the goalie might do, so I just tried the move and it worked out. Being here in Salt Lake City, playing with this team, it’s amazing. I’m having so much fun and glad I could help our team get the win.”

Laura Stacey opened the scoring for Canada just over two minutes into the game. It was a drastically different start for Canada who allowed five first period goals in game one of the Series.

After Grace Zumwinkle tied it with a beautiful solo effort, Marie-Philip Poulin and Laura Stacey each tallied to give Canada a two goal lead heading into the third period. Emma Maltais added to Canada's lead to open the third. USA however, was not done.

With several minutes remaining, USA decided it was time to push for a comeback. Pulling their goalie, USA's Hilary Knight capitalized on a rebound with 5:42 remaining in the game. After USA took a penalty, Grace Zumwinkle scored an outstanding shorthanded tally spinning off Canadian defenders before beating Ann-Renee Desbiens for her second of the game. With time winding down and USA trailing by a goal, the Americans again pulled their goalie. And again, captain Hilary Knight found the puck and knotted the game at 4-4 with only 1:26 remaining.

With the game heading to overtime, both teams had chances to end it, but netminders Ann-Renee Desbiens of Canada, and USA's Gwyneth Philips were equal to the challenge. The game required a shootout to end things.

In the shootout, Marie-Philip Poulin was the first to score. In the fifth round with the ability to end the game on her stick, teenage phenom Chloe Primerano lived up to the hype scoring a highlight reel shootout goal to lift the Canadians to a 5-4 win.
