Prep Sports Report: Sehome Mariners on an impressive fall run across all sports

The queens and kings of all four girls fall high school sports, plus boys tennis and cross country, might all wind up walking the halls of Sehome.

The Mariners have been so overpowering that their combined record for the six sports after events of Saturday was 43 wins, two losses and one tie.

But before district and state tournaments in November, a few princesses and princes await at other schools, hoping to ruin Sehome’s run at six possible titles.

The Mariners face a potentially perilous doubleheader of sorts against Lynden on Tuesday, Oct. 15, in the border town.

In girls soccer, Sehome (9-1-1 NWC, 9-2-1 overall) faces league-leading Lynden (11-0, 12-0) at 4 p.m. at Bender Fields. After this game, each team has three more.

In volleyball, a large crowd is expected at The Jake when Sehome (8-1, 8-1) meets Lynden (8-1, 8-2) at 7 p.m., with Whatcom County bragging rights on the line. After the match, each team has five more.

In boys tennis, the dual-match season ends Monday, Oct. 14, with a rematch at Bellingham at 4 p.m. between the second-place Bayhawks (12-1) and league-leading Sehome (13-0), which was a 5-2 winner Oct. 2.

In girls swimming, Sehome (5-0) will try to spoil the bid of Bellingham (6-0) for a second consecutive unbeaten season when the NWC pool powers meet at Arne Hanna Swim Center Oct. 22. The dual-meet season is nine meets.

And in cross country, Sehome’s defending state champion boys and girls (a combined 8-0) are both ranked No. 1 in 2A and are heavily favored to win the NWC championships Oct. 23 at the Port of Skagit Trail.

Could it really be Sehome, Sehome, Sehome, Sehome, Sehome and Sehome? The next two weeks will tell the tale of six crowns.
