Prep football roundup: South Point wins, Hickory Grove Christian falls
South Point rallied with a pair of second-half touchdowns Friday night and downed Hunter Huss 36-22, winning a share of the Big South 3A football championship.
The Raiders (8-1, 6-1) tied for first place with Kings Mountain, but South Point earned the conference’s top seed in the 3A playoffs, by virtue of its 28-21 victory Oct. 11 over Kings Mountain.
Hunter Huss had taken a 22-21 lead at halftime, but South Point went ahead to stay on a 17-yard touchdown run by Patrick Blee with three minutes left in the half. The Raiders added a two-point conversion for a 29-22 lead.
South Point got the insurance points with about one minute remaining, on a 3-yard touchdown run by Chancye Ford.
Hunter Huss finished fifth in the Big South 3A but remains in contention for a playoff berth. Those berths will be announced Sunday.
Asheville School 51, Hickory Grove Christian 9: The host Blues (6-1) rolled to a 51-0 lead and won easily in this N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Division 2 semifinal. Asheville School will face Fayetteville’s Trinity Christian, which beat previously unbeaten High Point Christian on Friday night, in next weekend’s state championship.
Senior quarterback Ricky Tolbert completed 13 of 16 passes for 326 yards and six touchdowns for Asheville School. Hickory Grove Christian finished 8-4.
Cox Mill 44, Concord 20: The Chargers scored two touchdowns in the final minute of the third quarter, pulling away to a nonconference victory. This was an “extra’ game, added by permission of the N.C. High School Athletic Association, but it will not count in either team’s official season record.
Cox Mill led 17-7 at the half, but Rose Petroff scored on a 55-yard run midway in the third quarter, and Concord narrowed the gap to 17-14.
Cox Mill’s Mason Emery ran 7 yards for a touchdown with about 40 seconds left in the third quarter, and the Chargers scored again just 15 seconds later on an interception return.
Cox Mill added touchdowns in the fourth quarter on a long pass and on a punt return.
