Prep football recap: Emmett flexes its muscles. Skyview blanked. Receiver carries Homedale
Emmett heard all preseason how big and how tough the Canyon Ridge football team would be. But the Huskies manhandled the playoff team from a year ago Friday, cruising to a 34-6 win in the debut of its new artificial turf field.
The Huskies (1-0) rolled to 487 yards of offense, running for 318 yards at 6.8 yards per carry as Emmett dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.
“We were told they were big, but they didn’t bring what they said they were,” said Emmett senior guard Sam Buck, a returning first-team All-Idaho offensive lineman. “They talked a lot of trash. But they couldn’t compete with what they said.
“... They clearly do not have a weight room running, because we steamrolled them all.”
Canyon Ridge (0-1) junior Brenner Kunz picked off two passes in his own red zone in the first quarter, rescuing the Riverhawks from an early blowout. But it was all Emmett the rest of the way.
The Huskies established their physical superiority early. They made it clear to everyone in the stadium when they dialed up a quarterback sneak from the 8-yard line, and Ryder Scheibe followed a sea of blue into the end zone for the opening score.
Emmett’s beefy offensive line returned four of five starters after paving the way for two 1,000-yard rushers a year ago. The group continued to blow open running lanes for whoever took the ball Friday.
“They tough. They strong,” Scheibe said. “That’s all I’ve got.”
Lincoln Thayne led the Huskies with 116 yards on 19 carries. Scheibe added 87 yards on 10 carries. And Nessen Korell turned six carries into 71 yards and a score.
Scheibe also settled in after his two early interceptions, running Emmett’s option offense and finishing 9-for-18 for 162 yards and a touchdown. A knee injury cost him half of his junior season. But he showed the potential that makes him and Emmett so dangerous after relying on a one-sided offense last season.
“It was kind of nice to finally be able to showcase that we can be multidimensional,” Emmett coach Rich Hargitt said. “We can change personnel groups. We can change formations. We can do some things with the football.”
Emmett’s dominance in the trenches extended to the defensive side, too, which returned only one starter. Canyon Ridge mustered just 187 yards of offense on the night, and 92 of them came in the fourth quarter with the game already out of reach.
Junior running back Ievin Ceballos accounted for the bulk of that damage, running for 115 yards on 19 carries.
NAMPA 42, CENTURY 7
The Bulldogs (1-0) snapped a 10-game losing streak with a blowout win in the first game on their new artificial turf field.
Nampa racked up 466 yards of offense, including 401 yards on the ground. Ryker Good and Kartez Hernandez both ran for 95 yards and a touchdown, and Omarion Vasser ran for 89 yards as the Bulldogs averaged 9.3 yards per carry.
Nampa forced three turnovers on defense, including Conner Campbell’s pick-six interception. And Makai Venegas converted 3-of-3 field goals.
MINICO 17, SKYVIEW 0
The Spartans (1-0) pitched a season-opening shutout at home, sealing the victory with Tucker Arthur’s 40-yard pick-six with 4:22 left in the fourth quarter, the Times-News reported.
Skyview quarterback Trevan Plew finished 10-for-18 for 148 yards and two interceptions as part of a two-quarterback system. Idaho commit Mason Krahn added 100 total yards on 12 offensive touches, and DJ Rosti hauled in five catches for 62 yards for the Hawks (0-1).
HOMEDALE 22, SNAKE RIVER 6
Luke Henry scored all three touchdowns and grabbed an interception for the No. 2-ranked Trojans (1-0). The senior receiver hauled in five catches for 115 yards and two TDs, and he ran for 18 yards and another score as the Trojans fell a late touchdown shy of a home shutout.
Homedale junior Xavier Uranga finished his starting debut 9-for-16 for 157 yards and two TDs. Rafael Cuenca also snared an interception while hauling in four passes for 74 yards. And David Walker made 10 tackles, including four tackles for loss.
FRUITLAND 32, KIMBERLY 28
Kaden Mackenzie ran for 202 yards and three touchdowns as the Grizzlies opened their season at home Saturday.
Sophomore quarterback Titus Vidlak finished the night 16-for-28 for 187 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 55 yards and another score.
Joel Philpot stood as his top receiver, turning four catches into 73 yards and a touchdown. Mackenzie also had four catches for 50 yards.
