Pre-Season Check-In: The Silky Mitten State Episode 41
The latest episode of The Silky Mitten State is live!
On this week's show, Connor Earegood and I take stock of the Red Wings five games into an eight-game pre-season slate. Specifically, we try to focus on the aspects of the roster where we believe there are genuine competitions for roles.
We began that conversation with a conversation around the final roster spot. Entering camp, we were expecting to see 13 forwards, eight defensemen, and three goalies on the opening night roster. Now that seems less assured. We break down a few scenarios in which that math might be disrupted, touching on Jonatan Berggren, Austin Watson, Carter Mazur, Nate Danielson, and Marco Kasper.
From there, we assess the state of the goaltending rotation, focusing in particular on Ville Husso's excellent outing in Pittsburgh last night, where he made 43 saves on 44 shots. We also discuss our first impressions of Cam Talbot and expectations for Alex Lyon.
Finally, we wrap the show by discussing the state of the power play, including Derek Lalonde's remark this afternoon that he anticipates a similarly "fluid" approach to personnel to the one that helped the Red Wings climb into the top 10 in the league on the man advantage a year ago.
