(Alta-Municipalities)

The president of Rural Municipalities of Alberta says he's frustrated that a bill before the legislature won't stop the province from intruding on local governments.

Paul McLauchlin says the legislation -- as first tabled -- would give Premier Danielle Smith's cabinet unchecked power, including the ability to fire councillors if deemed in the public interest.

Changes to the bill this week would mean cabinet could only oust locally-elected officials by ordering a recall vote.

McLauchlin says that won't be enough to fix a bad bill. (The Canadian Press)
