(Alta-ASIRT-Phillips)

Alberta's police watchdog says there are reasonable grounds to believe two officers committed criminal offences when they did a criminal record check on local New Democrat M-L-A Shannon Phillips.

But the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team says there will be no criminal charges against the Lethbridge officers after determining the circumstances didn't meet its test to go to court.

One officer overheard Phillips discussing environmental issues in a coffee shop back in 2017 when Phillips was environment minister, and then texted a fellow officer with the information.

The two subsequently searched the M-L-A in police databases, photographed and followed her. (The Canadian Press)

The president of Métis Nation -- Saskatchewan says a new treaty document that sets the stage for self-governance is 150 years in the making.

Glen McCallum says the recently launched document would require Ottawa to recognize M-N-S as a government, protect its rights to make decisions and clear the way for self-jurisdiction when it comes to health care, education and more.

Seventy-five per cent of M-N-S citizens have to vote in favour of the treaty for it to be ratified.

It comes after Métis Nation -- Saskatchewan withdrew from a bill that would recognize Métis organizations in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Ontario. (CTV Saskatoon)

The head of the Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police says auto theft is different on the Prairies compared to other Canadian provinces.

Mitch Yuzdepski says luxury vehicles are being stolen in neighbouring B-C as well as Ontario and Quebec and then shipped abroad.

But he says a third of cars in Saskatchewan are taken because drivers leave keys inside their vehicles, adding they are stolen for various criminal offences including joyriding and dangerous driving.

Saskatchewan Government Insurance says the number of claims it got for stolen vehicles last year was about three-thousand-400 -- that's nearly 200 fewer than it reported in 2022. (CJME)

The Holy Trinity Anglican Church is believed to have been built in the early 1880s and some say it's a miracle it hasn't fallen yet.

It would cost more than seven-million dollars to repair the church's foundation.

The congregation says the historic site could collapse within the next three years. (CTV Winnipeg)
