Practice Update: Latest Red Wings' Lines and Injuries

Today, the Detroit Red Wings (6-7-1) held their first practice following Saturday night's 4-0 loss to the New York Rangers. That practice featured a very similar lineup to the one that played Saturday night, but Ben Chiarot and Jeff Petry did not participate:

After practice, coach Derek Lalonde clarified that neither Petry nor Chiarot is dealing with an injury. Instead, both players traveled to Toronto to help celebrate their former teammate Shea Weber's induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame. "Ben and Jeff attended the Hall of Fame ceremonies from yesterday into today as guests of Weber," Lalonde explained of his second pairing's absence this morning. "Obviously, it was an invite by the Montreal Canadiens, which was very classy. They actually took care of travel, which is really cool. Good moment. Obviously had to maneuver with five D today, but I thought it was a productive practice."

Alex Lyon—whose lower body injury necessitated the Red Wings to call Ville Husso back up fro Grand Rapids last week—did not participate in practice, but Lalonde said that he took part in an individual skate earlier in the morning. Lalonde suggested that Detroit would have a clearer timeline on Lyon's absence tomorrow.

The Lyon injury is a somewhat curious one, if only because of the timing. Lyon was healthy enough to back up Cam Talbot last Wednesday in Chicago, only for the news of his injury and Husso's call-up to come two days later. "He tweaked a little something — lower-body, yesterday," Lalonde told reporters last Friday, when that news came down, so it sounds as though it's been a bit of a nagging injury for Lyon that became more acute after last Thursday's practice. Lalonde has characterized Lyon as "day-to-day," so the good news is that it does not appear he will be absent long.

The Red Wings play again Wednesday, on the road in Pittsburgh before a western swing through California.
