Postecoglou says Spurs signing has ‘carried’ team this season

Ange Postecoglou has said Dominic Solanke has carried Tottenham ‘on his back’ for much of the current campaign.

Spurs signed Solanke in a £65m club-record deal from Bournemouth in the summer and the forward has 10 goals and five assists in 25 appearances across all competitions. Injuries to Richarlison have meant that Spurs have lacked an alternative to Solanke, allowing little rest for the 27-year-old.

Postecoglou has been delighted with the performances of Solanke, who he said has been ‘outstanding’ since his arrival in North London. The Australian praised the player’s ‘all round game’ and said Solanke has been forced to carry ‘that position on his back with no help and no rest’.

He believes the new England manager, Thomas Tuchel, will have been impressed by Solanke’s displays this season. Tuchel is set to attend the club’s clash with Newcastle in the Premier League on Saturday lunchtime. Tuchel officially began his tenure earlier this week.

“Dom [Solanke] has been outstanding for us. He has scored goals but his all round game and capacity to help the team in all aspects of our football – defensively, link-up play, still being a presence in the box, really intelligent with his movement and really carrying that position on his back with no help and no rest, ” Postecoglou said at his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Newcastle.

“It says an enormous amount of his character and what kind of person he is. I can’t speak highly enough of him. The load he has had to carry for us over the last two months without a lot of help from us allowing him to recover and yet he’s still every week putting in a massive performance – I’ve got no doubt Thomas Tuchel will be impressed with him.”
