Postecoglou leads sack race odds as Spurs slump continues
Ange Postecoglou has emerged as the clear favourite to be the next Premier League manager to leave their position.
The Australian finds himself under-fire after Tottenham crashed to another defeat at the weekend, losing 3-2 at Everton.
Defeat leaves the North Londoners 15th in the Premier League table, just eight points above the relegation places. After narrowly missing out on Champions League football last season, Spurs are 14 points adrift of the top four this time around.
Injuries have played their part and Postecoglou’s side have struggled amid depleted defensive options. First-choice centre-back pairing Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are sidelined, as is goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. Following the defeat at Everton, Postecoglou said there will be ‘urgency’ shown to bring in additions before the January deadline.
But will Postecoglou be the man to oversee those signings? Using information from 20bet Sports News, the former Celtic manager’s odds to be the next Premier League boss to leave have been slashed.
He’s been cut to odds-on favourite (1/2), ahead of Leicester’s Ruud van Nistelrooy (4/1). The Foxes fans appeared to turn on Van Nistelrooy at the weekend, after a seventh straight league defeat. Former manager Steve Cooper was unpopular, but had Leicester above the drop zone. Under Van Nistelrooy, who arrived in December, Leicester have taken just four points from nine games. They currently sit 19th in the table.
Incredibly, the next two managers in the running are also new arrivals. Ivan Juric (5/1) has failed to halt Southampton’s slide towards the Championship.
The Saints have taken just six points from their 22 games, the worst-ever start to a Premier League campaign. Such has been their struggles, there are fears Southampton could break Derby County’s record for the fewest points won in a Premier League season. The Rams collected just 11 points on route to relegation in 2007/08.
Wolves boss Vitor Pereira (12/1) is fourth-favourite to be next to go. The Portuguese coach has been in charge for just five matches, but recent defeats to Nottingham Forest and Newcastle have left Wolves precariously placed above the drop zone.
