Poll: Who should be the Miami Herald’s high school Athlete of the Week? (Sept. 2)
South Florida’s top athletes are already putting together memorable performances this season in the fall sports season (volleyball, golf, cross-country, swimming, bowling).
This week, we continue a feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week in those sports in Miami-Dade and Broward.
Below is a look at the candidates from last week’s action. Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, Sept. 5, around 10 p.m.
You may vote as often as you like until then.
Here are the candidates from last week’s events:
▪ Sohan Patel, American Heritage, boys’ golf: Patel fired a 3-under 69, finishing second at the 24th American Heritage Boys’ Golf Invitational at Lago Mar Country Club in Plantation. Patel and senior Pavel Tsar of North Palm Beach-Benjamin actually tied at 69, but Tsar won on a playoff hole.
▪ Marcelo Mantecon, Belen Jesuit, boys’ cross-country: Mantecon led the field (294 runners), covering the two loop 5K (3.1-mile) run in a course record 15 minutes and one second at the Cecil Field Summer Classic in Jacksonville. His efforts led the Wolverines to the team title.
▪ Sasha Kawas, Divine Savior, girls’ volleyball: Kawas totaled 12 kills, eight digs and three aces to lead the Sharks to a big win over Lourdes Academy.
