Poll: Who should be the Miami Herald’s High School Athlete of the Week? (Nov. 11)

South Florida’s top athletes were recognized last week in the sports of bowling, cross-country, golf, and volleyball.

This week, we continue a feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week from cross-country, golf, swimming, and volleyball in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

Alec De Angulo, Miami Belen Jesuit swimming: the freshman was a double winner (200 IM at 2:01.65 and 100 back at 54.45) at districts in boys’ 2A, while helping the Wolverine win the team title.

Gia Culler-Guerra, Miami Springs golf: the senior won her sixth consecutive district title and third region title in girls’ golf in 2A.

Nohan Gomez, Miami Ransom Everglades swimming: the senior was a quadruple winner (100 butterfly at 51.73 100 back at 53.80, 200 free relay at 1:30.23 and 400 free relay at 3:22.16) at districts in boys’ 1A, while helping the Raiders win the district team title.

Nicole Lewis, Miami Doral Academy cross-country: the freshman won a district title in 4A at 19:30.6, while also helping the Firebirds place second.

Sohan Patel, Plantation American Heritage golf: the sophomore won district and region titles in boys’ golf in 2A to advance to state. He also led the Patriots to a district title and a runner-up region finish to qualify for state as a team.

Zoey Matias, Miami Westminster Christian volleyball: the senior led the Warriors to their third state title in program history, first since 2016. She totaled 18 kills and 27 digs in a 2A state final win over Ocala Trinity Catholic. She helped key the state semifinal win over Naples First Baptist Academy. It marked Westminster’s sixth consecutive state final match, and Matias has been a part of each of them.

Alessandra Perez, Miami Lourdes cross-country: the sophomore won a district title in 3A at 20:01 to lead the Bobcats to a team title.

Lilly Riegger, Plantation American Heritage golf: the junior won a district title and was runner-up at regionals in girls’ golf in 2A, advancing to state. She also led the Patriots to a district title and runner-up region finish to qualify for state as a team.

Alina Rodriguez, Pompano Beach swimming: the freshman was a triple winner (200 free at 1:59.25, 100 butterfly at 58.92 and 400 free relay at 3:42.93) at districts in girls’ 2A, while helping the Tornadoes win the team title.

Lorenzo Rodriguez, Miami Belen Jesuit golf: the senior shot 9-under par 63 to capture his third individual district title in the past four seasons. He also led the Wolverines to a 2A district team title and third place at regionals to reach state.

Reese Rosenthal, Miami Gulliver Prep swimming: the senior was a quadruple winner (500 free at 25.56, 100 breast at 1:08.62, 200 medley relay at 1:54.26, and 200 free relay at 1:44.67) at districts in girls’ 2A, while helping the Raiders place second.

Anthony Scarcello, Miami Columbus cross-country: the senior won a district title in 4A at 16:25.5, while helping the Explorers place second.

Juan Vallmitjana, Davie NSU University swimming: the sophomore was a double winner (200 free at 1:40.22 and 500 free at 4:27.11) at districts in boys’ 1A.

Alexander Weinberg, Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest golf: the senior tied for first at districts and then won a region title to advance to state. He also led the Panthers to district and region team titles en route to state in 1A.

Isabelle Wilson, Miami Carrollton swimming: the senior was a double winner (200 free at 1:59.47 and 500 free at 5:08.74) at districts in girls’ 1A, while helping the Cyclones win their first district girls’ team title over powerhouse Ransom Everglades.
