Poland vs Netherlands LIVE!

Substitute Wout Weghorst snatched an 83rd-minute winner as the Netherlands fought their way back to beat Poland 2-1 in the Group D opener at Euro 2024 on Sunday, leaving it late to win a contest they dominated.

Weghorst had barely been on the field when he finished an expert pass from Nathan Ake to secure a deserved three points.

Poland shocked with a 16th-minute opener from striker Adam Buksa, brought into the team to replace injured talisman Robert Lewandowski. He rose expertly to head home stand-in captain Piotr Zielinski's corner.

A deserved Dutch equaliser at the Volksparkstadion came 13 minutes later as Cody Gakpo's shot took a deflection off Bartosz Salamon.

Poland vs Netherlands highlights

  • GOAL! Buksa heads Poles in front

  • GOAL! Dutch deservedly level through Gakpo

  • GOAL! Weghorst strikes late off the bench

Official man of the match Cody Gakpo reacts

16:10 , Marc Mayo

“It was a tough match, tough opponent, well organised.

“They scored first so it was a little bit more difficult but we created good chances - but we have to be more clinical.

“Overall we performed pretty well and they performed pretty well too. Tough match but at the end we won.”

What next for Group D?

Jeremie Frimpong fails to win a foul with a blatant flop up the pitch but it’s still Netherlands coming forward.

Wout Weghorst is still on the Burnley books, by the way. His name is currently being sung en masse by the Oranje fans in Hamburg!

Poland 1-1 Netherlands | 70 mins

15:27 , Marc Mayo

Smart stuff from Wojciech Szczesny to smother a Denzel Dumfries ball into the six-yard box after more good work from Donyell Malen. The Borussia Dortmund man has looked decent since coming on.

Poland then win a free-kick to quell the pressure.

Poland 1-1 Netherlands | 68 mins

15:25 , Marc Mayo

Superb noise from the Polish fans as they whistle Dutch possession they cheer a smart breakaway,

Karol Swiderski has Adam Buksa in support but goes alone and loses out to Stefan de Vrij.

Good work from Donyell Malen in his first touches to find Denzel Dumfries on the right flank, he lines one up and smacks a shot wide across the face of goal.

Poland 1-1 Netherlands | 62 mins

15:19 , Marc Mayo

No surprise to see Ronald Koeman turning to his bench after a good period of Polish pressure.

Donyell Malen and Georginio Wijnaldum replace Joey Veerman and Xavi Simons.

Poland 1-1 Netherlands | 60 mins

15:16 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

A much better cross from the left finds Jakub Kiwior free at the far post. He has time and skews the shot a bit but draws a save from the keeper.

Piotr Zielinski then hits the target but it’s a comfortable save.

Poland 1-1 Netherlands | 58 mins

15:15 , Marc Mayo

Brilliant break from Nicola Zalewski to leave Jerdy Schouten in his dust before Denzel Dumfries tracks back to concede a foul high up the pitch.

Piotr Zielinski already has one set-piece assist today but that delivery was, err, bad. Easily cleared.

Poland 1-1 Netherlands | 56 mins

15:13 , Marc Mayo

Protests from the Oranje end as Virgil van Dijk is pulled up for a challenge on Adam Buksa, he just got the man before the ball but it’s a little soft.

They break pretty quickly though and Cody Gakpo tees up Xavi Simons... he flashes his shot wide! Looked a bit too casual stepping onto it and ended up on the stretch.

Double Polish change now. The Bologna teenager Kacper Urbanski and Taras Romanczuk off for Karol Swiderski and Bartosz Slisz.

Poland 1-1 Netherlands | 52 mins

15:09 , Marc Mayo

Painful one for Xavi Simons who is caught by Jakub Moder’s flailing arm in the throat while challenging for the ball. Didn’t seem deliberate at all but the young winger will need treatment.

Poland 1-1 Netherlands | 51 mins

15:08 , Marc Mayo

Like the end of the first half, we’ve still got the Dutch pressure but without the chances being created.

Poland are readying more changes already.

Poland can be pleased with their efforts

14:59 , Marc Mayo

They haven’t forged many attacks but Poland have looked decent when they have punctured the formidable Dutch press.

They’ll need to cut down the sheer number of Netherlands chances however.

You hate to see it

14:55 , Marc Mayo

One Dutch fan was double parked with a pint of beer in each hand before kick-off... until he lost one to a flying ball!

Netherlands on top but not ahead

14:49 , Marc Mayo

Cody Gakpo has been a major threat with plenty of support from Nathan Ake and Denzel Dumfries at full-back in particular.

But it’s been a little wayward in front of goal with Gakpo and Memphis Depay guilty of the worst misses.

Lots of possession, lots of shots... the Dutch are still in need of a winner.

Half-time!

14:46 , Marc Mayo

Memphis Depay shoots wide and that’s the break!

Good game, this. Plenty to play for with the score level at 1-1.

Adam Buksa put Poland ahead from a corner before Cody Gakpo’s deserved, deflected leveller.

Poland 1-1 Netherlands | 45 mins

14:45 , Marc Mayo

Good Polish attack collapses with a misguided through ball by Piotr Zielinski.

At least both teams are taking risks in attack, which are yielding chances. We’ve now had 17 shots this half, 13 from the Dutch, as Tijjani Reijnders punts one over from range.

We’ll have one added minute.

Poland 1-1 Netherlands | 42 mins

14:42 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

Nathan Ake pops up with a supreme overlap on the left and cuts a fine low cross for Cody Gakpo... he stabs a right boot at it and somehow fires over from close range!

Really needed to wrap his left foot around that.

Poland 1-1 Netherlands | 40 mins

14:40 , Marc Mayo

A thunderclap from the Polish fans keeps this rocking atmosphere going.

Perhaps we’ll get a few more nerves creeping in after the break with Netherlands still keeping the ball well but lacking a bit of bite in recent minutes.

Poland 1-1 Netherlands | 36 mins

14:36 , Marc Mayo

Poland have responded well to the goal.

A very entertaining first half of tournament football is edging towards its conclusion.

Poland 1-1 Netherlands | 32 mins

14:33 , Marc Mayo

Hard to argue with that one, Netherlands were on top ever since going behind - and before that, too.

Now the question is whether they can do what Italy did last night and grab the lead.

Poland on the attack first though and Bart Verbruggen gets down low to deny a shot on goal from Jakub Kiwior.

CODY GAKPO SCORES VIA A DEFLECTION!

Lovely interception by Nathan Ake up the pitch and the Dutch get a slice of luck from Gakpo’s long-range hit to level up!

Poland 1-0 Netherlands | 27 mins

14:27 , Marc Mayo

Another near miss for Poland as Denzel Dumfries arrives to a Cody Gakpo cross and skews his header.

It’s still alive at the far post and Jan Bednarek rather fortuitously deflects the ball out for a corner. Poland deal with it but remain sat deep against the Dutch aggression.

Poland 1-0 Netherlands | 24 mins

14:23 , Marc Mayo

Much more of a half chance this one as Memphis Depay comes down the right channel and flashes a shot-cross across the face of goal and out.

Can Poland weather this storm?

Poland 1-0 Netherlands | 22 mins

14:21 , Marc Mayo

CHANCE!

Again the Dutch come close with a direct move forward bouncing for Memphis Depay after Xavi Simons’ slip... and he punts a volley over.

Very decent opening, that.

A first proper foray forward from Poland and Adam Buksa’s shot is closed down by Virgil van Dijk. Great noise inside Hamburg today, now it’s the Poles’ chance to shout.

Poland 0-0 Netherlands | 10 mins

CHANCE!

Joey Veerman rolls a ball across to Tijjani Reijnders and he clips a shot wide of the near post from the penalty spot.

Poland 0-0 Netherlands | 8 mins

14:08 , Marc Mayo

Big roar from the wall of Oranje behind the goal which Netherlands are attacking after their strong start.

Decent start by Cody Gakpo on the left wing and Denzel Dumfries is bombing on from right-back.

Bartosz Salamon punts the ball towards the Dutch goal from miles out. Guess that might be technically a shot...

Poland 0-0 Netherlands | 5 mins

14:04 , Marc Mayo

Polish fans whistle Netherlands as they take it slow out the back but the Dutch spring into their box with pace and another chance almost falls for Cody Gakpo.

There’s a decent press from the Dutch on Poland’s possession too, which is already looking a little imprecise and reliant on long balls.

Poland 0-0 Netherlands | 3 mins

14:02 , Marc Mayo

SAVE!

Cody Gakpo cuts in on the left flank and a low shot has to be parried wide by Wojciech Szczesny.

That draws the game’s first corner, which is nodded away easily at the near post.

The stadium announcer’s big countdown of 10... 9... 8... made it to seven before Poland just kicked off anyway. Let’s hope that directness is witnessed in both teams’ approach.

Early possession for Netherlands and they win a throw up the pitch.

The favourites are Netherlands but they’re not much of a force on paper. Let’s see how Ronald Koeman can change that after the best part of a decade in the doldrums.

Poland certainly are unfancied and lack Robert Lewandowski from their line-up.

First up a rousing rendition of ‘Wilhelmus van Nassouwe’ for the Dutch before Poland open up their vocal cords for ‘Mazurek Dabrowskiego’.

Where will the threat come from for Netherlands?

13:47 , Marc Mayo

Memphis Depay may be without a club but the 30-year-old is a mean threat on the international stage, with 45 goals for Netherlands.

Xavi Simons and Cody Gakpo are two creative, energetic wingers but neither have fully lived up to their potential yet. AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders will likely play a more advanced role in their 4-3-3 in support.

Denzel Dumfries is a big threat from right-back but Nathan Ake will not offer the some bombastic force from the left.

Poland 'still a threat without Robert Lewandowski'

13:41 , Marc Mayo

Underdogs Poland put on a brave face ahead of their opening Euro 2024 clash with the Netherlands, insisting that victory was possible despite the absence of prolific striker Robert Lewandowski and a poor qualifying campaign.

The 35-year-old, who has scored 82 goals in 150 internationals, misses out with a hamstring injury but will be on the bench and is in contention for Poland's other Group D games versus Austria and France.

"It is a great pity Robert Lewandowski cannot help us in this match," said midfielder and replacement captain Piotr Zielinski on Saturday.

"He is a world-class player and we will miss him. But whether it is me or the team mates, we will add something extra to achieve the goal, which is to win."

Coach Michal Probierz said his third game without Lewandowski was an opportunity for other players to shine during a generational shift which is underway in the Polish squad.

"There's nothing to hide, we will miss him. But other players will have to do what they can to get a result. I hope he will have other opportunities to play," he said.

Lewandowski has been out on the pitch for the warm-up but we’re not expecting him to play much of a part off the bench.

Where will the threat come from for Poland?

13:36 , Marc Mayo

Poland hand Italy-born Roma wing-back Nicola Zalewski a debut on the left flank, behind teenage winger Kacper Urbanski, who featured in Bologna’s strong campaign as they qualified for the Champions League.

Sebastian Szymanski is on the opposite flank will combine with Przemyslaw Frankowski in a more experienced partnership, with a combined 74 caps.

Piotr Zielinski will be the playmaker in the middle and their towering three-man defence will be a threat at set plays.

Dutch can win Euro 2024, says Ronald Koeman

13:25 , Marc Mayo

Ronald Koeman will send the Netherlands into their opening Euro 2024 battle with Poland confident they will be in the mix for the title.

Koeman, a European Championship winner as a player in 1988, believes this year's tournament is wide open, but that his team is one of the contenders.

He told a press conference: "In my opinion, there is not a big favourite, maybe the French team a little bit more than the rest because they have a lot of experience, they have won already big tournaments.

"But I think it will be an open fight between different nations - and one of them is Holland."

Skipper Virgil van Dijk was equally bullish as he prepared to lead his side into Sunday's Group D clash at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg.

Van Dijk said: "There are obviously very good teams around, obviously France, Germany, Portugal, England. But I think at a tournament, it can be totally different.

"Hopefully we can be at our best and be up there. That's the aim and that's what we're going to fight for."

New pitch at Volksparkstadion

13:16 , Marc Mayo

The newly-laid potch at Volksparkstadion was off limits to both Netherlands and Poland the day before their opening game at the European Championship.

A new grass surface was laid at after host club Hamburg completed their home fixtures on May 19 in the Bundesliga second tier.

Four weeks later, UEFA wanted to protect it from the teams' traditional eve-of-game practice before the stadium hosts its first game at Euro 2024.

"We are not allowed to train here either, because of the bad quality of the pitch," Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman said.

UEFA insist the surface "is in good condition and in order to preserve its quality the official (training) will take place at the respective team base camp."

Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk suggested the pitch was similar to the one in Frankfurt where the Oranje lost to Germany 2-1 in a March friendly."It's not very good but both teams have to face it," said Van Dijk, a couple of hours after Poland captain Piotr Zielinski suggested: "It doesn't look that bad."

Adam Buksa replaces Robert Lewandowski for Poland

13:10 , Marc Mayo

Michal Probierz has handed the starting striker role to Adam Buksa off the back of his 16-goal season with Turkish club Antalyaspor.

Piotr Zielinski will be the chief creative force in the centre of the park while Jan Bednarek and Bartosz Salamon boast plenty of experience at the back alongside Arsenal’s Jakub Kiwior.

They should lead in a 3-4-3 formation.

Dutch entrust Cody Gakpo to lead the line

13:02 , Marc Mayo

Goals must come courtesy of a fairly low-key frontline for Netherlands today as Cody Gakpo, Memphis Depay and Xavi Simons are named in the line-up.

Denzell Dumfries is preferred to Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong and Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven misses out to Stefan de Vrij in the middle of the defence.

It’s a very experienced bench featuring Steven Bergwijn and Georginio Wijnaldum, but Ronald Koeman will have to get more than the sum of its parts out of this XI if they are to go deep.
