Plenty Of Canucks Connection On Team Canada's 2024 Spengler Cup Team
The end of December brings along one of the oldest traditions in hockey. No, it's not the World Juniors, but the Spengler Cup, which started in 1923. The six-team tournament is set to begin on December 26, 2024, with plenty of former Vancouver Canucks featured on Team Canada's roster.

The most notable name on this year's roster is Sam Gagner, who played 81 games for the Canucks over the span of a season and a half. After spending last season with the Edmonton Oilers, Gagner retired from the NHL with over 1,000 games under his belt. The 35-year-old is one of the oldest players on the roster and should help form the leadership group.
As for the blue line, it features two players who played with the Abbotsford Canucks. Madison Bowey skated in 53 games for Abbotsford during the 2021-22 season, while Matt Irwin played 65 games last season. On top of his time in the AHL, Bowey also played two NHL games with the Canucks in 2021.

Layton Ahac will also play for Canada at this year's tournament. The 23-year-old is currently playing for Abbotsford but will be loaned to Team Canada for the Spengler Cup. In four games this season, the left-shot defenceman has four penalty minutes and six shots on goal.
The last connection comes in the form of Dylan Ferguson, who will most likely be Canada's goaltender this year. Ferguson was brought to Vancouver's training camp on a PTO before signing a contract with the Iowa Wild. In six AHL starts this season, Ferguson is 3-3-0 with a .899 save percentage.
The 2024 Spengler Cup starts on December 26, when Team Canada faces HC Davos. Canada has won 16 Spengler Cups and will be looking for their first title since 2019. Game time is set for 11:15 am PT.
