Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang announces Marseille departure

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (35) has announced that he wants to leave Olympique de Marseille to begin a new chapter in his career. Aubameyang only moved to La Provence last summer, and after a difficult start rapidly became one of the key players for the squad.

Aubameyang’s goals helped paper over the cracks in a difficult season for Marseille, where despite reaching the Europa League semi-final, the squad failed to qualify for Europe and win more than five games away from the Stade Vélodrome.

The veteran striker has been heavily linked to the Gulf State, with Al-Qadisiyah reported to have agreed personal terms with the forward in a deal that would see him earn €20 million per year. There had been some doubt over whether Marseille would allow Aubameyang to leave since he had not told Pablo Longoria his intentions face-to-face.

However, this issue now appears to have been resolved with the Gabonese international writing on his Instagram, “Time for me to start a new chapter. Thank you, Mr. Frank McCourt, thank you Pablo for accepting my departure, thank you for your support in any ordeal but especially thank you for offering me the chance to discover the warmth and passion of the Vélodrome.”
