Maybe it was the look on Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce’s face that should have made it apparent that the Chiefs were not leaving Arrowhead Stadium without a victory on January 12, 2020.
That was the day the Chiefs clawed their way back from a 24-0 deficit and kept rolling on to pummel the Houston Texans in the AFC Divisional Round playoff game by a final score of 51-31. The Chiefs became the first NFL team to ever win a playoff game by at least 20 points after trailing by at least 20.
There were many Chiefs players wearing intense game faces on that day.
Former Chiefs defensive end Frank Clark was spotted on the sidelines during the game wearing an expression that looked as if someone on the Texans’ offense was about to be introduced to a lesson on misery.
When it looked like the Chiefs were down for the count, quarterback Patrick Mahomes rallied the troops with words that took on a life of their own—“Let’s go do something special.” The words sunk in and teammates dug deep to make special things happen.
The Chiefs’ scoring drought broke in the second quarter with the first of Mahomes’ five touchdown passes. From there, the Chiefs put up 41-consecutive points before coasting to their final 51-31 romping of the Texans.
Even with minutes left to play and the Chiefs holding a commanding lead, Mahomes could be seen on the sideline standing next to head coach Andy Reid with a brooding look that seemed contradictory to knowing they were moments from advancing to the AFC Championship game. The clock was about to tick down but whatever gears were turning in Mahomes’ head weren’t going to stop until a win was in the books.
Before the game was over and before the Chiefs had put more points on the board, due to all the scoring, the Chiefs’ pyrotechnics team ran out of fireworks to blast into the air for touchdown celebrations.
Here are photos from one of the greatest Chiefs comeback victories ever.
Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce made just enough plays to overcome an otherwise ugly offensive day for Kansas City. That might not work next week against a much tougher opponent.
