Phillies 3B Alec Bohm becomes second former Shocker to start MLB All-Star game

For the second time in program history, a former Wichita State baseball player will start in the MLB All-Star game.

Alec Bohm, who played the hot corner for the Shockers from 2016-18, was voted the starting third baseman for the National League in the July 16 All-Star game in Arlington, Texas. He joins former Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Joe Carter, a five-time All-Star, as the only other former Shocker to earn a starting nod in the All-Star game.

Even with Wichita State’s prestigious past, Bohm is the first former Shocker to be picked as an All-Star since Carter earned his final all-star selection in the 1996 game. Bohm is the fourth former Shocker to be named an All-Star, joining Carter, Tyler Green (1995) and Ken Berry (1967).

Bohm, now 27, won the fan vote with 70% of the votes to beat out San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado.

Bohm is enjoying a breakout year in his fifth season in the majors. He leads the NL with 68 RBIs and all of baseball with 28 doubles to go along with a .297 batting average.

Alec Bohm has been the starting third baseman for the Philadelphia Phillies on their improbable run to the World Series. Bohm, who left WSU in 2018, is the first former Shocker to reach the Fall Classic in a decade.

The former WSU All-American helped the Phillies reach the 2022 World Series, becoming the first former Shocker since Carter to start in the Fall Classic.

Bohm, an Omaha, Neb. native, was a prized recruit for former WSU head coach Todd Butler who earned third team All-American honors following his junior season. He hit 16 home runs that season, which were the most by a Shocker since 2004, which led to him being selected by the Phillies with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft.
