Phil Mickelson donates $500K to historically Black college prior to The Match 3

Phil Mickelson is making a significant donation prior to The Match 3. Mickelson announced Tuesday he had donated $500,000 to Jackson State University, a historically Black college and university in Mississippi.

All four golfers participating in the event selected a historically Black college to receive charity money from The Match 3. Mickelson will donate his $500,000 in addition to the charity money.

Mickelson said that while he will never fully understand the challenges Black people face in the United States, he wants to be part of the solution, according to Golf.com.

“I am not knowledgeable, I am not qualified to talk about race, OK?” Mickelson said on the 21st & Prime podcast Tuesday. “As a white male, I’ll never be able to understand the challenges that Black America goes through, but I want to be part of the solution.”

Jackson State has not announced how Mickelson’s donation will be used.

It’s expected Mickelson’s donation will increase thanks to “bonus challenges” during The Match 3, which will take place Friday, Nov. 27. It event will begin at 3 p.m. ET, and will air on TNT.

Tiger Woods is out of The Match, but Charles Barkley is in

Mickelson will be joined by Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry, Indianapolis Colts legend Peyton Manning and NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley for The Match 3. Tiger Woods has taken part in the event in the past, but pulled out this year. The Match 3 will feature Mickelson and Barkley teaming up against Curry and Manning.

Mickelson is far from the first golfer to give money to a historically Black college in 2020. In November, Augusta National set up a Lee Elder scholarship at Paine College. Elder was the first Black man to compete in the Masters. A few weeks later, Cameron Champ donated $40,000 to Prairie View A&M University to set up two golf scholarships.
