PGMOL ‘investigating’ David Cootes social media video
Professional Game Match Officials Limited is reportedly ‘investigating’ a video on social media showing David Cootes making disrespectful comments aimed at Liverpool and former manager Jurgen Klopp.
The PGMOL – the body responsible for refereeing games in English professional football – are set to investigate after footage emerged of Cootes calling Klopp ‘arrogant’ and a ‘German ****’.
At the end of a second video, Cootes says to the person filming ‘that video can’t go anywhere, seriously’.
BBC Sport journalist Simon Stone has revealed that PGMOL – of which Howard Webb is Chief Refereeing Officer – are ‘aware’ of the footage and investigating’ the matter.
On his X account, Stone wrote: “PGMOL are aware of a video circulating on social media and are investigating.”
The video has emerged with Cootes under question for his officiating during Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday.
Cootes appeared to wave play on when Mohamed Salah was brought down by Leon Bailey as the last man, with Darwin Nunez taking the lead and finishing past Emi Martinez. The incident was picked up on by TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher.
“Let’s just have a look at the goal and look at the action of David Coote when Leon Bailey brings Mo Salah down,” Fletcher said during TNT’s live coverage.
Co-commentator Lucy Ward added” “That is certainly a foul,” to which Fletcher replied: “Is he saying play on? Or is he saying that’s not a foul? I think that is the concern if that is the way he is seeing it.”
