Pep Guardiola reveals current Manchester City goalkeeper ranking after Ederson dropped against Liverpool
Manchester City will not see an alteration in their ranking of goalkeepers despite the decision to drop Ederson in favour of Stefan Ortega Moreno against Liverpool.
The Germany international was a shock inclusion in Manchester City’s starting line-up against Arne Slot’s side on Sunday afternoon, and pulled off several hugely important saves to ensure that Guardiola’s players remained competitive in the fixture.
The alteration in the goalkeeper position came after Ederson had been deemed somewhat responsible for Manchester City’s calamitous deterioration in the UEFA Champions League days prior, conceding three goals in the final 15 minutes to draw 3-3 with Feyenoord.
However, prior to the clash with Liverpool, Pep Guardiola insisted that those supposed individual errors were not the reason behind the goalkeeping change, and that is was merely a decision of wanting something different between the sticks.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday afternoon ahead of Manchester City’s next Premier League challenge, Pep Guardiola was quizzed on whether his goalkeeper ranking had changed over the last few days, in light of the decision to start Stefan Ortega Moreno against Liverpool.
“Ederson is the number one, Stefan [Ortega Moreno] is the number two, yeah,” Pep Guardiola clarified when asked whether the latter could now see a run of starts in the line-up for Manchester City after his outing at Anfield.
Guardiola continued, “But maybe Stefan continues (in the starting line-up), we will see tomorrow, and in the next games.”
Further pressed for insight on how Ederson reacted to the decision not to start him against Arne Slot’s side on Sunday afternoon, the Manchester City manager revealed, “Really good. We know each other from eight years, nine years, so.”
Manchester City welcome Nottingham Forest to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night hoping to end their run of seven consecutive matches without a win, as they face the side immediately beneath them in the Premier League table in sixth position.
Pep Guardiola has further stressed the importance of the role of his side’s supporters at home this week, insisting that they are fully aware of the situation the club find themselves in, as well as what the crop of players has brought to Manchester City on a success front.
