Manchester City fans may have to wait several more months before finding out whether Pep Guardiola will extend his Etihad Stadium contract or not, according to a report.

The nine-year stay, as things stand, will be coming to an end following completion of the upcoming 2024/25 season for Pep Guardiola, who is rapidly approaching the expiry of his last contract extension signed in the Autumn of 2022.

Guardiola’s contractual situation has a further element of complication to it next summer too, with Manchester City’s greatest-ever coach set to be out of a deal before the start of the club’s 2025 FIFA Club World Cup campaign in the United States next summer.

The Etihad Stadium head coach did however insist that he is happy at the club, whilst reassuring fans and players alike that he remains open to extending his stay with Manchester City, despite having not made a final decision yet.

Speaking to reporters in New York on Friday night, the City manager explained, “When I’m leaving, I will say I’m leaving. But I didn’t say that… We will see what happens. But I will not rule it out absolutely to extend my contract. I would love to stay.”

Now, according to the information of HITC’s Graeme Bailey, Premier League champions Manchester City are not prepared to discover Pep Guardiola’s future at the Etihad Stadium until the end of the year.

It is revealed that the 53-year-old spoke with the club’s hierarchy at the end of last season, but is not ready to make a firm decision over his future, with a two-year contract extension waiting on the table for the Catalan coach.

Manchester City bosses will no doubt be preparing themselves for the worst outcome this season with regards to Pep Guardiola, by earmarking some of the game’s best and most-promising coaches as potential successors to their legendary leader.

Among those to have been mooted with admiration from within the Etihad Stadium offices are the likes of Girona’s Míchel, Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta, and Germany’s Julian Nagelsmann, while there remains a chance of Bayern Munich’s Vincent Kompany entering the picture.

Guardiola has often tipped Manchester City’s legendary former captain as a future manager of the club, but following relegation with Burnley from the Premier League last season, a lot will be dependant on his success in his latest opportunity issued to him by the German giants.
