Penn State women’s volleyball team welcomed back to State College as national champions

More than a hundred fans gathered in Rec Hall on Penn State’s University Park campus Monday afternoon to greet the women’s volleyball team as they returned to Happy Valley after winning the NCAA Division I volleyball championship in Louisville on Sunday.

Bundled up in multiple layers of Penn State gear to stay warm during the trek to Rec Hall, fans also had signs, cowbells and shakers in hand. Ahead of the team’s arrival, everyone formed two lines that stretched onto the court.

The team entered Rec Hall just after 1 p.m. to cheers and the “We are Penn State” song blasting over the speakers. Players held the NCAA Division I trophy as they walked in, giving high-fives along the way. After, the team posed for photos and the crowd did the “We Are” chant.

Head Coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley thanked everyone for their support and the fans who cheered them on during the games.

“I’m so proud of this team,” she said.

She and some players hung around for a bit after to meet fans and autograph volleyballs, signs and brackets.
