Penn State, Notre Dame to play Orange Bowl in the Sunshine State. See the forecast

As Penn State and Notre Dame prepare to face off Thursday in the College Football Playoff semifinal, each program left its snow-covered campus to head south for a clash in Florida.

With kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Hard Rock Stadium near Miami, the Orange Bowl forecast calls for clear skies and light wind. The temperature is expected to be about 58 degrees at kickoff, so a light jacket may come in handy for fans at the canopied stadium.

Here’s what else fans should know about the forecast.

What’s the weather outlook for Penn State’s game against Notre Dame?

AccuWeather’s forecast predicts plenty of sunshine with no clouds Thursday in the lead-up to the game to be played in Miami Gardens, about 15 miles north of Miami. The high temperature is expected to be 66 degrees.

That’s cooler than usual this time of year in Miami, but AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tom Kines said it’s ideal in the grand scheme.

“By Miami standards it’s not the best weather, but for northerners it’s great weather,” Kines said.

Steady wind of about 8 mph is expected throughout the game, with gusts upward of 16 mph. Humidity, which can play a factor in muscle cramps, is forecast to increase as the night goes on, climbing from about 52% at kickoff to 73% at 10 p.m.

The temperature will likely drop about five degrees from kickoff into the fourth quarter.

What about the weather in State College and South Bend?

State College’s forecast calls for 20 mph wind, clouds and a high of 27 degrees. Wind gusts could reach about 40 mph, leaving much of the day to feel like it’s in the single digits.

South Bend, about an hour east of Lake Michigan in northern Indiana, is expected to have mostly sunny weather with a high of 29 degrees. Wind gusts could approach about 20 mph.

Neither college town is forecast to see temperatures above freezing for at least another week.
