Pedestrian was using her phone when a Brightline train struck her, witnesses told BSO

A woman was using her cellphone when she walked around a lowered railroad safety gate and was struck by a Brightline train in Pompano Beach last week, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

Dyanna Fernandez, 29, was walking eastbound on Northeast Sixth Street near North Dixie Highway with a cellphone on hand around 7:30 a.m. Friday when she went around the lowered sidewalk safety gate and continued east across the railroad tracks, witnesses told Broward detectives. That’s when a Brightline train heading south struck the Fort Lauderdale resident.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue paramedics declared her dead on scene, the sheriff’s office said Monday in a news release.
