Just hours earlier, John Cena, who plays the titular character in the DC series, shared a similar photo to his Instagram.

Peacemaker premiered on what was then known as HBO Max on Jan. 13, 2022, with its first three episodes, followed by weekly releases building to a Feb. 17 finale. TVLine readers gave those first three episodes an average grade of “A,” which is also what the finale and all of Season 1 earned.

The series was renewed for Season 2 back in February 2022, just hours before its freshman finale premiered.

Since the news of Peacemaker‘s renewal, Gunn was named co-CEO of DC Studios (alongside producing partner Peter Safran). Not long after that, he announced he would be writing Superman (fka Superman: Legacy), the first feature film in his and Safran’s new DC Universe. Come March 2023, Gunn decided he would also direct Superman.

Despite the initial announcement that Gunn would write and direct every Season 2 episode, he said in March that plans had changed amid his commitment to the feature film: “In the interest of getting the show out there, I won’t be able to direct them all (only some).” In a January Threads post, Gunn confirmed that he has written all eight episodes as planned.

Casting details for the sophomore season have been few, outside of the returns of Cena, Jennifer Holland (as Harcourt) and Steve Agee (as Economos), all of whom shared “start day” photos on Saturday. As for Freddie Stroma’s Adrian Chase aka Vigilante, Gunn has said he will “probably” be seen again before Peacemaker Season 2.

As far as a release date goes, nothing official has been announced. But we do know that it will come out after the Viola Davis-led Amanda Waller TV series that was announced back in January 2023 as part of Gunn’s new DCU. (The first TV series in that new DCU, though, will be the animated Creature Commandos, due for a late 2024 release.)

Gunn has also said that Peacemaker Season 2 “is coming out after [Superman],” which currently has a theatrical release date of July 11, 2025. He has also confirmed the second season will take place in the new DCU, but has assured fans that it “won’t be confusing.”
