Paul Mitchell seals surprise Premier League return

Newcastle United have announced the appointment of Paul Mitchell as the club's new sporting director.

Mitchell steps in to replace Dan Ashworth after the 53-year-old joined Manchester United following some protracted negotiations.

Formerly of MK Dons, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and RB Leipzig, Mitchell left Monaco in 2023 and has long been tipped to return to the Premier League, with the likes of Chelsea, Man Utd and Liverpool all touted as suitors in the past 12 months.

However, Mitchell's return to England has come with Newcastle, who confirmed his arrival on Thursday.

"It's with immense pride that I accept the responsibility of being Newcastle United's new sporting director," Mitchell said.

"I've seen the recent growth and ambition of the club. This, plus the amazing fan base, made the decision to join an easy one.

"I can't wait to get started and help continue the organisation's growth and long-term competitiveness in all areas of elite football performance."

As director of scouting and analysis, Mitchell's tenure at Southampton was instrumental in the club's promotion back to the Premier League. His innovative and progressive recruitment strategy allowed the Saints to exceed expectations. He further enhanced his reputation in 2014 at Tottenham as head of recruitment.

In 2018, Mitchell joined RB Leipzig as head of recruitment and club development. Two years later, he joined AS Monaco as the club's sporting director - a position he held until October 2023.
