Paul Maurice’s Stanley Cup parade speech had it all — emotion, intent and, yes, profanity
Paul Maurice made his Stanley Cup parade speech on Sunday in a way that only Paul Maurice could.
With emotion. With intent.
And, of course, with profanity.
Maurice, wearing a white T-shirt with pictures of his cats Penny and Poppy, dropped a mere five “F” bombs during his speech on stage Sunday at Fort Lauderdale Beach as the Florida Panthers celebrated their first Stanley Cup in franchise history.
It fit Maurice’s persona to a tee. All throughout the playoffs, Maurice found used his press conferences as a way detract attention away from his players and therefore put the pressure on him. He did it tastefully, reading the moment to know when the words fit the situation.
Sunday, though, was an expression of pure jubilation. Like the Panthers franchise as a whole, Maurice waited three decades for this moment to win the Cup.
So, yeah, Maurice let everything out.
Here is Maurice’s 90-second quote in full form (children, avert your eyes): “Thirty [expletive] years. Thirty [expletive] years! For every [expletive] one of ya, 30 years! For that woman over there [Maurice’s wife, Michelle], 30 years married to an asshole. In my wildest dreams, I never would have thought I could see this. Seriously. Understand this: Everybody that we love in this world is [expletive] happy right now! I want to thank all of the police officers and fire department, especially the fire department that had to fix my daughter and her friend who took a beer can off the head — God bless ‘em. I want to thank all of you for welcoming our families to Florida. Our wives, our children to come to Florida. My two cats — Poppy and Penny. My daughter made this shirt. I promised her if we won the Stanley Cup that I’d be wearing that shirt. I got one more word for you, and actually it’s not for you [the fans]. This is for you [expletives].”
Maurice then turns to his players and stretches out his arms.
“Freeeeeeeeedom!”
After three decades, Florida Panthers’ Paul Maurice finally won his Stanley Cup
