Pass or Fail: Oilers scrapping blue home jerseys for orange

The Edmonton Oilers clinched a playoff berth for the first time since 2006 on Tuesday night. It was a heck of a way to celebrate their first season in Rogers Place.

New building. New captain. Back in the playoffs. And, beginning this postseason, a new look going forward.

Via the Edmonton Journal, when the Oilers begin their first-round series in a few weeks, they’ll be saying goodbye to blue and wearing orange for all of their home games. When the NHL switches to Adidas next season and teams can only use two jerseys, the classic blue look will be replaced with orange.

“I want to touch and respect the past, but we’re in a new building. We’re in a new era. We have a new leader in Connor McDavid. We have a team that is building their identity for today,” said [CEO and vice-chairman of Oilers Entertainment Group Bob Nicholson] the former head of Hockey Canada. “It’s great to talk about playoff memories from the past and 2006, but this is a new era.”

SportsLogos.net reported back in January that this decision was coming.

The Oilers debuted the orange jerseys at the 2015 Draft when they selected Connor McDavid first overall. The orange design was a tribute to the jerseys the franchise wore during their early days in the World Hockey Association. They wore them seven times last season and 15 times this season, including during October’s Heritage Classic against the Winnipeg Jets.

This isn’t the first time the Oilers have done away with classic blue and orange look that brings back memories of the franchise’s glory years in the early 1980s. From 1996-2008 Edmonton went with a darker blue before bringing back the blue and orange jersey as an alternate in 2008.

It remains to be seen if under Adidas third jerseys will be brought back, which could open the door for a return of the blue at some point. A poll on that Journal story had readers preferring the blues over orange 53 percent to 32 percent. But the Oilers brass want to create their own identity now separate from the Gretzky years, and that begins with some orange.

So what do you think of the decision?
