Team USA had a big day on the track to maintain a slim lead in the gold medal count at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. The Americans currently hold 31 gold medals (and an Olympics-best 108 total medals), one behind China's 32.

Eight gold medals were up for grabs in the penultimate full day at Stade de France, with the men's and women's 4 x 100-meter relays standing out as the Americans' best chance to continue a strong overall performance. The men had to deal with both history — the team hasn't medaled since 2008 due to persistent baton issues — and the loss of Noah Lyles, who was announced to have COVID after taking bronze in the 100-meter dash.

Team USA's Rai Benjamin will also be looking to take down defending Olympic champion and world record holder Karsten Warholm in the men's 400-meter hurdles.

The women's basketball team extended its Olympic winning streak to 60 games after dominating Australia in the semifinal and will face France or Belgium in the gold medal game.

Elsewhere in Paris, France and Spain faced off in the gold medal match for soccer, Brazil and Canada will play the gold medal match in beach volleyball and breaking (i.e. breakdancing) makes its Olympic debut.

Algeria’s Imane Khelif won the gold medal in 66kg women’s boxing finals, capping a whirlwind Olympics that found her in the middle of global controversy over her gender. She defeated China’s Liu Yang in a unanimous decision.

A sizable Algerian crowd roared their approval, chanting “I-MANE, I-MANE” and nearly blowing the roof off Roland-Garros, the tennis facility being used for the medal rounds of the boxing tournament.

The fans had been vocal throughout, offering encouragement and waving Algerian flags in support of the 25-year-old. They celebrated each combination before cheering the end-of-round results.

Khelif was dominant against Liu, who was a game fighter who often took the attack to Khelif. The two boxers repeatedly tapped gloves and offered mutual respect to each other, even hugging at the end.

Khelif won all five scorecards in the first two rounds to all but guarantee victory.

  • Spain wins gold in men's soccer despite stunning French comeback

The Summer of Spain continues as Spain claims the gold medal in men's soccer, just weeks after the senior Spanish team won the UEFA European Championship.

In a wild final match, Spain earned gold despite a French comeback that forced extra time. Although France — and the raucous French home crowd — threatened to spoil Spain's win, the Spanish were able to add two more in extra time to win 5-3.

France took the early lead, but Spain scored three goals in ten minutes to take the 3-1 lead in the first half. But France didn't stop fighting, and scored in the 79th minute to get within one.

Les Bleus had a stroke of luck in the third minute of stoppage time, as a foul in the box led to a penalty kick. French captain Jean-Philippe Mateta took the kick and buried it to tie things up at 3-all and force extra time.

During the first period of extra time, Spain's Sergio Camello scored in the 100th minute to take the lead again. France was searching for the equalizer up to the last moments, but a Camello goal in extra time's stoppage time sealed the deal for Spain, and silenced the home crowd.

This race went wrong for the U.S. with the baton pass between the first and second leg. As Coleman approached with the baton, Bednarek left too early and then had to slow to a halt to avoid a disqualification for the pass occurring outside the zone.

Canada won gold in 37.50. South Africa took silver (37.57), while Great Britain took bronze (37.61).

  • Discover the wonder that is the Olympic modern pentathlon

The Olympics does a fine job of identifying the finest athletes in individual sports. But there’s only one event — a strange little outlier of an event — that identifies the best athletes in multiple sports. Where else can you see the world’s best try their hands at swordplay, horse jumping, shooting, running and swimming, all in 90 minutes’ time?

There’s a purity to the modern pentathlon. Like the heptathlon and the decathlon, it uses a combo platter of skills to assess the greatest athletes. But it’s also a determinedly out-of-step competition, designed to crown the 19th century’s definition of a well-rounded athlete. The five disciplines that comprise the modern pentathlon carry a certain elegance to them; a truly modern pentathlon would probably include competitive eating, Wordle and Power Slap.

Because of its archaic nature — and because the use of horses in athletic competition has gone very much out of style — the Paris Olympics mark the last time that the modern pentathlon will exist in its current format. The horse element of the pentathlon will be removed, to be replaced with an “American Ninja Warrior”-style obstacle course. And even that might not be enough to save the sport’s Olympic fortunes; modern pentathlon is not yet guaranteed a spot on the 2032 Brisbane slate.

  • Get to know new Olympic sport Breaking

    What is breaking?

Breaking is a type of dance with four main elements:

Toprock or Uprock: Breakers begin upright, then transition to the floor.

Downrock: The flashiest, quickest part of the dance. Breakers, connecting to the ground with both hands and feet, spin and twist and contort their body.

Power moves: The highlight. Emphatic, athletic, eye-catching moves that require significant strength.

Freezes: Sometimes, though not always, at the end of a performance, a breaker holds a pose — sometimes upside down — that the average human often can’t even comprehend.
