Sheetal Devi made a splashy entrance onto the world stage at the Paralympics 2024 in Paris with a bull’s eye shot that showed off her considerable archery skills, and the internet is taking notice. At just 17, Devi is one of Team India’s rising stars, and is one of four archers competing at the Paralympics without arms. She is also the only woman. According to Olympics.com, Devi was born with phocomelia, a rare disorder which ultimately resulted in her arms not fully forming.
Joining Team USA's Matt Stutzman, Belgium’s Piotr Van Montagu, Mexico’s Víctor Sardina Viveros, who also use other body parts to excel at the sport of archery, Devi uses her feet to load and fire a bow and arrow.
One of the first posts to share her performance was made on Saturday August 31, and garnered over 60 million views and nearly half a million likes in a single clip posted to X. In the video, Devi is seen landing a perfect bull’s-eye during an elimination round of the women’s individual compound open event. “Sheetal Devi is poetry in motion. Just 17 years old,” one user wrote. The reaction to Devi's performance is part of a growing interest in the Paralympics, attention that's long overdue.
On September 2, Devi and Rakesh Kumar went on to win bronze in the mixed compound archery event at the Paralympics 2024.
But it’s not the first time the star archer has medaled at a global event. During her 2023 debut season, Devi became the first female armless archer to win a medal at the Para World Championships and won gold at the Asian Para Games in the same year. World Archery also named Sheetal Devi the Best Women's Para Archer of the Year for 2023.
Here are just a few of the reactions to her amazing display of para archery prowess:
