Pape Gueye set to join Villarreal following Marseille exit

After having left Olympique de Marseille upon his contract expiration, Pape Gueye’s (25) future is expected to lie in Spain, as Villarreal is edging closer to finding an agreement with the Senegal international.

Pape Gueye’s journey in Marseille came to an end after four seasons of ups and downs. The defensive midfielder failed to live up to the expectations placed in him when he joined from his boyhood club, Le Havre. With a four-month ban, a disappointing loan at Sevilla FC, and his unwillingness to leave before his contract expiration so that Marseille could collect a fee, which results in his ostracisation from the first-team, the Senegalese international is now eager to start a new challenge and seems to have found his new destination.

According to a report from Fabrice Hawkins, the defensive midfielder is set to sign a four-year deal at Villarreal. Despite a difficult journey with Marseille, Gueye has declined approaches from Lyon, Stade Rennais, and AS Monaco, refusing to play elsewhere than Marseille in Ligue 1.
