Bryce Young getting benched by the Panthers sent shock waves through the NFL
The Bryce Young era of Carolina Panthers football might already be over.
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported on Monday that the Panthers intend to start veteran quarterback Andy Dalton going ahead and will sit the former first-overall pick out of Alabama.
Carolina got off to a dispiriting 0-2 start after going 2-16 the year before, Young's rookie season that saw his first offensive coaching staff fired and replaced since he joined the Panthers in spring 2023.
We do not see franchises make moves like this with first-overall picks often, which further solidifies what a sad development this is out of Charlotte.
After entering the franchise with such promise, Young may not start another game for the Panthers.
Sources: The #Panthers are benching former No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young and starting veteran Andy Dalton beginning this week.

Of course, a report of this magnitude shocked NFL fans.

Legit impressed by Canales. Most coaches would stay too pot committed to the first overall pick. This is unquestionably the right move -- Young just does not have the tools to be a starting NFL quarterback.
Next step: find some mark to trade you a semi-decent pick for Young. https://t.co/C5y74OjJnw— Benjamin Solak (@BenjaminSolak) September 16, 2024

if the betting market immediately moves toward your team as soon as you bench the starting QB, it’s probably time to find a new starting QB https://t.co/dNkKwzOEKU

This is awful coaching. You are giving up on a number one overall pick because of an 0-2 skid for a team that never had a chance of sniffing the playoffs. The season “slipping away” is ridiculous. He is in his 2nd season learning multiple offenses. They’re failing him. https://t.co/husBb4NZ4h

Nothing short of horrific that we're here this early but Carolina didn't have another choice. One thing you can't do is bs the players. Anyone watching the games knows this isn't credible football out there. Imagine how the other guys on the field feel. https://t.co/mOuz2fDYWn
