Oxford sign Chelsea's Matos for rest of season

Championship club Oxford United have signed England Under-20 midfielder Alex Matos on loan from Chelsea for the rest of the season.

Matos, 20, made his Chelsea debut against Fulham in the Premier League in October 2023 and was a regular starter in the second tier after joining Huddersfield Town on loan in January.

"Alex has a great pedigree as a player and I was impressed with what he showed last season at Huddersfield," said Oxford manager Gary Rowett.

"There's a huge hunger in the player to come in and succeed and that's a mentality that is exciting to work with.

"He will offer something different to us, which is important to ensure we have many different options.

"I'm looking forward to working with him straight away to see how he can enhance the midfield and the team."

Norwich City academy product Matos joined Chelsea from the Canaries in June 2023 and won his first international youth cap away to Sweden a year later.

One of his 23 appearances for Huddersfield was at Manchester City in the FA Cup third round last season - a stage of the competition Matos could be involved in again when Oxford visit League One side Exeter City on Saturday (15:00 GMT).

"I am confident I can help the team and become a better player under (Gary Rowett's) guidance," said Matos.

"I'm a tenacious player who likes to get up and down the pitch and put a tackle in.

"Having experienced the Championship last season, I'm really happy to be back in the league as I feel it suits my style. My aim is to come in and make an instant impact."

Oxford are five points clear of the relegation zone after taking 10 points from four matches since Rowett replaced Des Buckingham on 20 December.
