The alternate captain was blunt about what must happen for the upcoming season.

"We feel the energy from the fan base around San Jose. We owe them a better season than last year and a better season than the last five since I've been here," Ferraro said. "We owe them something better, and we [have] to start trending in the upward direction. It's been going downhill for the last four or five years. Now, it's time to start trending upward. We have the talent. We have the character guys in this room. We have the pieces to do it."

The Sharks made many moves in the offseason, and since Mike Grier became the GM, he has drafted or brought in big players. For Ferraro, that doesn't matter.

"I'm a player. I don't know how to build a team. I don't know what kind of size guys a team would need, but I think we need to get bigger in terms of our compete level, and the way we battle out there, and our desire to win," Ferraro said.

Ferraro said new head coach Ryan Warsofsky uses many mottos to coach his team. The defenseman wants the team to live and die by them, and he said that many of the phrases will be posted around the locker room.

"Warsofksy has his mottos that we're going after. I don't want to say them right now, but I'm sure you'll hear them throughout the year," Ferrao explained. "They're going to be around the locker room. We're going to we're going to live and die by them. It's a it's an exciting time for us right now."

The excitement around the Sharks is clear, and Ferraro feels that the leadership group is in a great place, regardless of whether players have a letter on their jersey.

"[Tyler Toffoli and Barclay Goodrow] are going to provide that leadership role in terms of leading by example, and they could be vocal," Ferraro said, "I think there's a lot of guys that don't have letters that are leaders as well. Just the way they compete and, the way they carry themselves off the ice, and the relationships that they build with with the people around them. We [have] a lot of guys that are going to contribute to leadership roles. We need that in our group."

Ferraro enters his sixth season in the NHL and has yet to make the postseason.
