Ovechkin Speaks On Capitals Goaltending Tandem, Thrilled For Thompson After Extension & Hopes Lindgren Also Re-Signs

When the Washington Capitals kicked off their season as the only NHL team with two full right goaltenders, captain Alex Ovechkin didn't know what to expect.

"It's gonna be weird; usually you don't have that kind of goaltending situation," he said.

Ultimately, it's worked like a charm for the league-leading Capitals, and the 39-year-old couldn't be happier as he hopes that remains the norm going forward.

After Monday's practice, Ovechkin took the time to speak on Washington's tandem after Logan Thompson inked a six-year, $35.1 million extension following his stellar start to his tenure in D.C.

"Happy for him, well-deserved, he play unbelievable," Ovechkin said.

Thompson ranks second in the NHL in save percentage (.925) among goalies with at least 20 games played, and he has lost just twice in regulation through 27 appearances this season.

Ovechkin also took the time to praise Charlie Lindgren, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season and expressed his desire for the team to extend him, too.

"I hope Chucky will sign as well, because both great guys, great players, and the chemistry that we have in the locker room, you don't want to change it up."

Not only that, but the 39-year-old said that the team is confident in its tandem as it aims to continue an impressive year. Both goaltenders have traded games on and off throughout the season, except for when Lindgren was injured.

“We feel confidence that those guys are gonna make a save in huge moments, they gonna keep us in the game and give us the opportunity to stay in the game," Ovechkin said.
