Ottawa Senators Goalie Earns An NHL Star Of The Week, Team's First Since March of 2023
For the first time since March of 2023, the NHL has named an Ottawa Senator one of its stars of the week.
Sens goaltender Linus Ullmark got the nod today as the NHL’s Third Star of the Week, ending Dec. 15, following a fantastic stretch that helped his team to three straight wins. The last player to catch a star from the league was Claude Giroux, getting a second star in the 2022-23 season.
Ullmark has won five games in a row, including the three they counted for this measurement period. In those three starts, Ullmark posted a .967 save percentage and a 0.99 goals-against average, stopping 88 of 91 shots.
Ullmark helped the Sens trample the Anaheim Ducks 5-1 last Wednesday, then followed up with one of his finest performances of the season on Friday night in Raleigh, where the Senators never seem to win. He recorded his career-high second shutout of the year in a 3-0 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Ullmark stopped all 32 shots he faced and, in doing so, helped the Senators reach an NHL-best four shutouts on the season. It's the first time in five years the team has had that many.
Ullmark also shone in a surprise back-to-back on Saturday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins, called into action after a late injury to Anton Forsberg in warmups. His ridiculous saves on Sidney Crosby and former Senator Erik Karlsson, en route to a 3-2 overtime win, won't soon be forgotten.
As for Ullmark's sluggish, injury-prone start to the season, Sens fans have no problem forgetting that. They'd prefer to focus on this impressive recent stretch which has surely helped to de-stress the Senators' front office as well.
