Orlando-based QB commits to Canes; what UM is getting. And more good news on the way?

After a slew of commitments for their 2025 recruiting class, the Miami Hurricanes picked up a key Class of 2026 pledge on Wednesday evening when Orlando-based quarterback Dereon Coleman announced he will attend UM.

Coleman, listed at 6-1 and 165 pounds, also had offers from Oklahoma, TCU, UCF, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Mississippi, Texas A&M and Nebraska, among others.

The Canes offered him a scholarship in mid June after he excelled at Miami’s 7 on 7 camp in Coral Gables.

Coleman, who attends Jones High in Orlando, completed 63 percent of his passes last season (116 for 183) for 2236 yards, with 16 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also ran for 247 yards and four touchdowns in leading Jones to a 10-4 record.

The 247 Composite rankings list Coleman as a four-star prospect and the 21st best quarterback and 302nd best player overall in the 2026 class. On3.com lists Coleman as the No. 24 quarterback and No. 315 player overall in that ‘26 class.

247 Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins described Coleman as a “quick-twitched passer with a live arm. Lacks the desired measurables, but can generate plenty of velocity with a lighting-quick release. Got varsity snaps as an eighth grader, but really made a name for himself as a sophomore in one of Florida’s higher classifications.

“Likes to pick defenses apart from the pocket and can flick the ball into the deeper third with ease..... Explosive lower half allows him to get away from pressure, but needs to improve internal clock and add some body armor. Should be viewed as one of the polarizing signal callers in the 2026 cycle given the combination of high-powered arm and suboptimal frame. Likely to find most success on Saturdays in an up-tempo spread attack.”

Coleman joins Class of 2025 quarterback Luke Nickel as future quarterback commitments for the Canes.

The Georgia-based Nickel is rated by 247 as the 25th best quarterback in the 2025 class. Last season, he completed 277 of 419 pass attempts (66 percent) for 3,914 yards with 39 touchdowns and 5 interceptions.

Coleman joins four-star Miami Carol City two-way player Jordan Campbell and four-star Plantation American Heritage receiver Malachi Toney as UM’s three 2026 commitments so far. Campbell projects as a college linebacker.

Meanwhile, the Canes are in the mix for two Class of 2025 recruits who plan to commit to schools this week.

Miami is widely considered the front-runner for Jacksonville-based four-star safety Hylton “Drake” Stubbs, who also is considering UF after de-committing from Southern Cal last week. He’s planning a Thursday announcement.

And Las Vegas-based offensive lineman SJ Alofaituli will choose among UM, Michigan and Nebraska at noon Friday. 247 Sports rates him the second-best interior offensive line prospect and the 55th-best player overall in the 2025 class.

The Canes have 15 commitments for the 2025 class after picking up nine nonbinding pledges since June 1. UM’s 2025 group is rated 14th in the nation by 247 Sports.
