Ontario Red Wins Gold At U-18 Canadian National Championships

It was the closest game Ontario Red had played throughout the tournament, as they were held to a single goal, but it was enough as the reigning champions repeated with a 1-0 win over Quebec.

The game was a goaltending dual between Quebec's Marilou Grenier, who was named the tournament's top goaltender, and Amelia Wilkinson who posted a 35-save shutout in the gold medal game.

After two scoreless periods, Ontario Red finally broke through in the third period when Dorothy Copetti tipped home a shot from Alex Therien to break the deadlock. The goal would stand as the national championship winning tally.

“That is the biggest goal of my life,” Copetti said.“Hockey doesn’t last forever in life—it’s only going to be a small part of my life—but this memory, scoring that goal, winning this tournament with this team is something that I will think about with so much pride for the rest of my life.”

British Columbia Skates To Bronze

British Columbia and Saskatchewan played a back and forth game with a bronze medal on the line, but eventually, it was Team BC that claimed the medal beating Saskatchewan 4-2.

Callie Rice continued her strong tournament up front for BC, as did London McDavid, each scoring a goal in the win. Taya Lonsdale and Anna McKee had the other British Columbia goals.

“This feels pretty good,” McDavid said. “We battled right until the end, stuck together and got the job done. It’s special… for a lot of us, this is our last chance to play together, so to go out with a bronze medal is an amazing feeling.”

One of the standouts in the tournament for BC was captain Danica Maynard. The smooth skating defender used her mobility and puck control skills throughout the tournament to help guide her province. The RINK Academy blueliner was named the tournament's Top Defender. She's headed to Penn State next season.

Scoring for Saskatchewan in the loss were Kiah Shields and Anneka Aspaas.

Cimeroni Named Tournament MVP

With five points in five games Maxine Cimeroni of Ontario Red was named tournament MVP. The Mississauga Hurricanes forward is a member of Canada's U-18 national team and will play NCAA hockey next season for Ohio State.

Grenier was the Top Goaltender and Maynard the Top Defender in the tournament taking two other honors. Also winning tournament recognition were Saskatchewan's Stryker Zablocki who was named the tournament's Top Forward, and Manitoba defender Kate Manness who was named the tournament's Most Sportsmanlike player.
