“One to Keep an Eye on” – Former Defender on Liverpool’s Interest in £50m Forward
Liverpool’s Transfer Plans: Former Defender Has His Say
Not many expected Liverpool to be in this position at the start of the season, with Arne Slot’s side sitting top of both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League tables. However, they now find themselves in a brilliant position to win their 20th league title and the January window marks an opportunity for the Reds to really solidify their push for the title.
However, some supporters have been left frustrated with the club seemingly not interested in strengthening whilst on top so far in the window.
Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock spoke exclusively to Anfield Index and gave his thoughts on the Reds’ transfer plans and their reported interest in a Premier League star valued at £50m…
Do Liverpool Need to Strengthen in January?
“I think it depends on what happens with the current squad of players,” began Warnock, “The likes of Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott have been linked with moves away from the club.” Both players have seriously struggled for game time and form under Slot, after featuring regularly under Jurgen Klopp last season.
However, Warnock doesn’t expect either player to secure a move away from the club this month, saying: “I don’t see anyone leaving this month though, and I think Arne Slot will be happy with the squad that he currently has.”
“They could perhaps bring in a player to give the squad a lift,” continued Warnock, “But Michael Edwards will only make a move for the right player and at the right price.”
Many will remember Liverpool’s move to sign Virgil Van Dijk back in January 2018, which really kickstarted the club’s recent success. But, they’ve also been opportunistic in January windows since then signing the likes of Takumi Minamino, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo.
Liverpool’s ‘Interest’ in £50m Forward
One player heavily linked with a move to Liverpool has been AFC Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo, valued at £50million. The forward has seven goals and three assists to his name so far this season, with the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur also registering their interest in the forward.
“I find it interesting because he plays on the right side where Mohamed Salah plays,” began Warnock, “They also just signed Federico Chiesa in the summer, so a move would really throw doubt over his future at the club.”
“I think it’s a lot of money but I do like the player,” continued Warnock, “But it’s a different pressure to play for Liverpool and he would need to score more goals.”
“It’s definitely one to keep an eye on…”
