Oilers trade Ryan Strome to Rangers for Ryan Spooner

Ryan Strome for Ryan Spooner. Trade is one for one.

The Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers exchanged beleaguered Ryans on Friday afternoon, with Spooner heading west to Oil Country and Strome joining the Blueshirts.

Incidentally, Strome and Spooner are each stuck on one goal and one assist to start the season, registering as complete non-factors on two teams suffering in the absence of secondary scoring — hence the changes in scenery.

Strome has been a problem in Edmonton since he was acquired (one for one, too) for Jordan Eberle in the summer of 2017. He exits with 14 goals and 36 points in 100 games.

The more expensive Spooner has a stronger offensive pedigree, with close to the same career output in roughly 70 fewer games. He looked to be turning a corner last season with 41 points in 59 games split between the Boston Bruins and Rangers, but hasn’t been able to carry over any momentum after seeing a production dip the season prior.

Spooner should factor into the Oilers’ power-play plans, but the landing won’t be so cushy at five-on-five if he’s expected to fill Strome’s vacancy. Much of Strome’s struggles from a shift-to-shift standpoint have only been exasperated by the fact that his primary linemate to this point in the season has been Milan Lucic.

Oilers GM Peter Chiarelli drafted Spooner with the 45th overall pick in 2010 back when he was in charge of the Bruins.

New York will retain a portion of the salary to make up the difference between Strome’s $3.1 million salary and Spooner’s $4 million annual earnings, per reports.
