Oilers Top Prospect Is An All-Star

There may not be an NHL All-Star Game this season, but the Oilers still have an All-Star.

That's because top prospect Matt Savoie was named to the AHL's Western Conference All-Star team as the Bakersfield Condors' only representative earlier today.

Savoie has looked the part of a top prospect all season, with 9 goals and 24 points in 29 games for Bakersfield. He's really figured out the pro game recently, with 12 points in his past 7 games after a relatively slow start.

This is exactly what the Oilers hoped for from Savoie when they acquired him from the Buffalo Sabres in the offseason, and it's especially impressive since this is Savoie's first full season as a pro. He acquitted himself well in a six-game cup of coffee with the Rochester Americans last season, scoring two goals and five points in his first taste of AHL action.

Though Savoie will be the only Condor at the All-Star Game in February, he won't be the only player of interest to Oiler fans. Ex-Oilers defenceman Ethan Bear will represent the Hershey Bears for the Eastern Conference, thanks to his 19 points in 31 games.

Savoie also won't be the only top prospect at the event. He'll be joined in the Pacific Division by goalie Yaroslav Askarov, who made his name against the Oilers by nearly stealing a win for the San Jose Sharks on December 21st.

Other top prospects named today include Devon Levi (BUF), Dalibor Dvorsky (STL), and former Edmonton Oil King Sebastian Cossa (DET), while former Oil Kings captain and Edmonton native Trey Fix-Wolansky (CBJ) will represent the Cleveland Monsters for the second time.

The AHL All-Star Classic will be held from February 2-3 in Palm Desert, California, the home of the Coachella Valley Firebirds.
