Oilers Social Media Achieves Big Milestone
EDMONTON -- Buzz is building in Oil Country.
The Edmonton Oilers just hit the ice the other day for captain skates. Leon Draisaitl signed an eight-year $14-million contract extension. Evander Kane just proposed to his girlfriend Kate. Life is good in Oil Country.
The Oilers socials team is also enjoying some success. In fact, the Oilers twitter account just reached a brand new milestone.

There are now over 1,000,000 followers of the Oilers twitter account. Not every single team has reached that. They join the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Vancouver Canucks, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers, Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks, Dallas Stars and Los Angeles Kings in reaching that benchmark.
It's important to note that every original six team is part of the (now) dozen teams to have 1-million twitter followers. It might not seem like a big deal, but it is.
To a lot of people, Edmonton is not seen as a big hockey market. But what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in passion. That passion is on clear display with how many Oilers' fan blogs have littered the internet for countless years.
This milestone also shows the world that the world of Oilers fans is growing. There are more and more people watching the team. They have come a long way from the early days of money troubles. It's tough to have a successful franchise if money is always an issue.
The recent success of the team has been a huge boost to the following. The Oilers have made it to the Western Conference Final or better in two of the last three seasons.
Like it or not, but the Oilers (and their fans) are here to stay.
