Oilers Need To Recall Top Prospect Immediately
EDMONTON -- What you need is often hidden right under your nose.
That is certainly the case for the Edmonton Oilers. Although the team has done well this season, it needs to iron out some oddities with its lineup.
Kris Knoblauch is attempting to spread out the offense to improve the team's depth. But as a coach, he can only do so much. The players must perform, and the GM must provide him with the right players.
The player who could help them the most with their top-six forward dilemma is in Bakersfield.
Matt Savoie Is Heating Up
Matt Savoie is scoring a lot in the AHL right now. He has 12 points in his last six games for the Bakersfield Condors. Five of those points have been goals.
In last night's game, he scored one goal, registered two assists, and fired five shots on goal.
The @EdmontonOilers prospect Matthew Savoie is on a major heater!
In on Lane Pederson's GWG in OT...
Savoie finished with 1-2-3 tonight and has 3-7-10/+7 in his last 4 GP for the @Condors— Bob Stauffer (@Bob_Stauffer) January 4, 2025
The young forward is tied for first in scoring among all Condors players with Seth Griffith. Both players have 24 points this season. Savoie has played 28 games, so he is inching closer to having a point-per-game pace.
Savoie Will Succeed Where Jeff Skinner Failed
Savoie is similar to Jeff Skinner in some ways. They are both skilled offensive players. However, their differences could help Savoie secure a call-up with the Oilers.
The two players have different playing styles. Skinner is a slippery player who glides along the ice, while Savoie is more direct and assertive when forechecking.
That's exactly the kind of player that Knoblauch likes.
Savoie looks like the perfect call-up for the Oilers. He has the offensive confidence right now to plug into the team's top-six to give it a jolt, but he also has a playing style that blends with what Knoblauch is looking for.
Looks like what the Oilers need is right under their nose.
