Oilers' Prospect Beau Akey Surging With Massive Game

EDMONTON -- The future is bright.

That is even more true for the Edmonton Oilers, especially if defenseman Beau Akey is in that future. The 2023 24th overall draft pick's development is key to the franchise's future success.

And it's coming along nicely.

Akey's season was cut short last season because he needed shoulder surgery. Before then, he played in 14 games and scored nine points.

Akey has only dressed for 10 games this year and has already hit that nine-point mark he did last season. This happened in no small part due to the monster game he had a few nights ago.

Akey, who plays for the Barrie Colts in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), had a four-point night. With one goal and three assists, he broke his personal record for points in an OHL game.

The right-handed protege kicked off the scoring 1:30 into the game's first frame. Akey had joined the rush to create a 3-on-2. He received a pass and made a quick deke, which fooled the goalie and created a wide-open net for him to backhand the puck past the goalie confidently.

Despite this being in the OHL, that level of skill and speed is impressive.

With his four-point performance, Akey was named the game's first star.

Remaining healthy for the entire season is paramount for the young defender. Hopefully, the Colts can make a deep playoff run, allowing Akey to gain more confidence and experience in high-pressure, high-stakes games.

Things are off to a great start for Akey. The future is definitely bright.
