OHL game cancelled after goaltender suffers gruesome leg injury

An Ontario Hockey League game between the Niagara IceDogs and London Knights was cancelled on Thursday night following a severe leg injury to Tucker Tynan.

The IceDogs’ goaltender had a Knights player collide with him in his crease and suffered a major cut to his leg.

A gruesome and bloody scene, Tynan was quickly attended to by medical staff on the ice and was eventually taken off the ice on a stretcher.

The score was 2-1 for London early in the second period before the incident.

Later in the evening, the IceDogs updated that Tynan — a 17-year-old from Chicago, Illinois — was in hospital undergoing emergency surgery.

The final update from the team for the evening was that Tynan’s surgery was a success. He remains in stable and safe condition.

Tynan provided an update on his status via his Twitter account on Friday, expressing his gratitude for all the support he’s received since the incident.

The OHL announced on Friday that the IceDogs’ next two games — in Peterborough against the Petes on Saturday and in Ottawa against the 67’s on Sunday — have been postponed “as the team continues to recover from the unfortunate events in Thursday night’s game.”

According to the release, Tynan is expected to make a full recovery.
